Sick hen

Sour crop can be difficult to treat. I have dealt with this twice with the same hen. She had impacted crop that went sour. It took a month about a year ago to treat her, it was touch and go. Lots of different diahhrea. Second time was just recently, she was impacted by straw. By the time I realized, her crop was sour with impaction. This time she needed the impaction removed, and there was a lot of straw removed mixed with her food she was no longer digesting. She no longer was pooping, only water was coming out. Everything I tried did not work. I had to treat her for sour crop as well. I used the Fluconazole. It worked. I don't know anything about what your using to treat her for sour crop, however, this treatment I used goes into there system. Using other treatments need to touch the yeast in the crop to work. This drug is an anti-fungal drug that is taken by mouth. Her pooping green can mean she isn't getting any nourishment. This can get critical. I used the baking soda and water in a link I posted here, it helps with gas they produce in the crop from the yeast.

Was her crop this morning hard, or squishy?

This morning her crop only felt like it had food in the bottom. It had gone way down. It still didn't go down all the way last night but it went down allot. When I got home from work she was more active eating her feed and the crop hadn't gotten any bigger than from this morn. She pooped several times and they all looked normal. Got her to eat some egg w/olive oil and kerif. Not drinking an excessive amount of water now just drinking normal. I hope to be on the uphill climb with her now. Where did you get Fluconazole at?

You can get Fluconozole from the drug store over the counter. It comes in a one capsule at 150mg. Depends where you live. Ask for it from the pharmacy.

It does sound good for your hen. Normal poops are a really good sign.

Thanks!!! How much would I give to a small silkie hen and how do you administer it?

If your in the US, you can also buy this in the fish medication.
Heres a link for dosage, however, i read its 10mg/kg or 10mg/2.2lb. I will keep looking for that info.

I mixed it with water, use bottled water and dosed her with a syringe once a day. It is normally its compounded. It has to be refrigerated, mixed well before each use. I found an article its compounded with distilled water.

Edited:
Fluconozole for Americans, go to 24 to see what it looks like.

I think it's 10mg or 20mg per kg (2.2 pound) once a day, but I need to double check that. It's given orally.

Very happy to report that her crop has went down and been down all day. She is eating good and pooping good. Keeping her in until she lays and egg and I know everything is back to normal not taking any chances..Thanks so much for everyone's help in getting my little girl better.

My hen that was sick seemed to get better and was out with the others for about 4 days and got sick again. I felt like it was coccidiosis and sour crop I know Sulmet is not as good as Corid but at the time i could not get it and had to order it. I have been giving the Sulmet and seeing improvement but sadly her crop has not went down all the way yet. I want to start her and the others on the Corid now that I have it can someone please tell me if this is safe? I also need to know how much of the liquid Corid goes in a gallon of water. Thanks in advance. I also got so nutri drench for when the treatment is done. It says .25oz in a gallon so how long do I give the nutri drench after treatment?
