Sign Stolen?

My opinion on this is that this time of year is a time for people to celebrate. For Christians it is the birth of Christ, and it is a big deal to Christians. I feel a sign like that is just rude, to Christians, to Jewish people, to those who celebrate Kwanza, etc. Solstice, I think, is in october or November....

It is not putting down other religions, it is stating a position and belief...nothing more. It is how the message is perceived by individuals.

Just as I can read one verse of the bible and 'see' one thing and you can read the same verse and 'see' something else.

How would you word it if it were your sign?

Just playing devil's advocate here because my beliefs follow neither the plaque's in whole or christianity.

If it were my sign and I was an athiest, I would not be participating in any holiday activity so there would be no sign!

Solstice is December 21st or so (sometimes a day or so before or after)

It was a holiday for many cultures before Christianity "came to them".

I don't really see how any city or any community could make everyone happy by posting all of the displays - no one would be able to get into the courthouse and worship at the altar of Big Government, then

Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, is in December my dear. As noted above.

You are, Samhain, October 31, the holiday where Pagan's honor their beloved dead and the veil between the living world and dead is said to the thinnest.
Pagan's have 8 holidays in the year, and only Samhain correlates with any of the other known holidays date wise.

:)

Samhain Oct31/Nov1 (celebrated by Wiccans, Celtic Reconstructionists and various other flavors of pagan paths)

All Saints Day Nov 1 (catholic holiday, but also celebrated by those who practice Vodoun, Santeria and other religions which incorporate Christianity/catholicism into their own paths)

Nov. 1st is also Day of the Dead in Mexico.

Hmmm... did I miss anyone? Probably,

Well, technically, no

I respectfully submit to you -

Mother Night, celebrated by Norse and Germanic heathens(pagans) which falls on the Solstice - also the celebration has other nights which last right up until Christmas and beyond.

Saturnalia - pagan Roman holiday, also the solstice.

Easter - Christian Holiday, also Pagan holiday, feast of Oestre (Easter) Norse and Germanic pagan.

St. Johns Eve - celebrated by Catholics and Vodouisants

Walpurgis Night and the following May Day - were pagan celebrations which were also celebrated by the early Christians (well, not walpurgis Night, but May Day was, and in some places, still is)

Now, I KNOW for sure I've missed a few (maybe many) but I got soem of them.

ETA _ I tend to differentiate between the general term "Pagan" and Wiccan, Witch, Heathen, Vodouisant, Santerian, etc... all of which could technically be lumped under the umbrella of Pagan - but whom have very different practices in many instances.

also ETA - most Vodouisants and Santerians consider themselves Monotheists, and would shudder if called Pagan

Consider that sign if it were written from a religious perspective. If the last paragraph said something like "Atheism stems from a spiritual state of denial that produces shriveled hearts and closed minds." Wouldn't you find that offensive? Would it be appropriate in a community venue? I think the sign was in very poor taste.

Well.......I am an atheist. I celebrate what my husband and kids and I call anything from Solstice to X-Mas, to Christmas. We aren't picky on the terminology. Most people have work schedules that more easily accomodate the traditional "Christmas" celebration. I am not offended when someone says "Merry Christmas" and often say it back.....why not. If someone is truly trying to spread happiness why should I try to burst their bubble. I am firm and comfortable in my beliefs and WOULD find that sign just as offensisve as a sign promoting Christianity....or any other belief system.. Keep it at home, at church, wherever you have a PERSONAL right to post your beliefs. I just see no reason to go posting ANY beliefs there.
