Sign Stolen?

It does me no harm if someone wishes to pray for me, or to "cast a spell" for me, or to thump me in the head when I needed it... well, the last one might hurt.

I believe what everyone said. Yes, if Christians and Jews and Muslims are allowed to display their signs of faith then the atheists and agnostists should be allowed to also. But you can't blame just Christians for stealing that sign (unless it said it in the news article, sorry I didn't read it) because that sign is attacking ALL religions.

They got the sign back. IMHO, that's good, as it's only fair to allow displays from everyone or else no one.

Whether the sign could have been worded more tactfully...Well, I've not once in my whole life seen or heard any Christian or Muslim water down their rhetoric or fail to say, "(whomever) is the One True God, and anyone who disagrees is going to a Bad Place" even though it's certainly dissing all the other religions in the world to say so publicly. (Say whatever you want in the privacy of your home/church, that ain't my business.) I see it as sort of, turnabout is fair play. Now, one might argue, why stoop to the level of bigots and fools, but unfortunately sometimes you have to stick up for yourself. Seeing as how some sign-thieves are more than happy to attempt to silence public debate, it seems the atheists in Washington are not unreasonable in their feeling that they need to stick up for themselves to be considered first-class citizens.

I absolutely agree that thankfully in this country we are each entitled to believe what we choose. I think government property decorations are a fair subject for debate. I would have a problem, though, with a sign that was purposely antagonistic to a specific group. There is quite a difference between celebrating ones own beliefs and stomping on those of someone else.

, of course, by saying "have a nice day" we're probably angering some folks who do not WANT to have a nice day, and who will NEVER have a nice day if they have anything to say about it!!

And you Can't MAKE them, either, so there!!

I think, as some others have stated, that the sign's wording is in poor taste and antagonistic.
I am an Atheist, and I don't think I would ever use those words to describe my beliefs (or non-beliefs), unless maybe they were at the tail end of a heated debate gone awry!

I think there should be room for all beliefs to be represented on government property, or none at all. Just because you find yourself with the majority opinion (Christianity, or secular religion even), doesn't give you the right to judge other beliefs.
Unfortunately, the actions of an individual, (in this case, the person who stole the sign and threw it in the ditch) can often reflect on many (people celebrating the birth of Christ through Christmas), but lets remind ourselves, it was probably just one disrespectful and intolerant individual.
The same can be said for the individual, or small group of individuals who agree with how Atheism was portrayed through those words on the sign. They should not necessarily reflect how most Atheist feel.

Exactly! I think I wanna have a miserable day thank you very much~!

I just wanted to pop in and thank everyone for keeping this civil; I appreciate hearing everyone's opinions, especially on controversial topics~ If everyone just took the time to sit down and listen to people, especially those with differing views than your own, the world would be much happier!~

I have to agree with what some people said; in a perfect world, I don't think that ANY beliefs should be posted on goverment property, (Separation of Church/Temple/Mosque/AntiChurch/etc. and State and all that), but until that day, I think it should be all or nothin'.

The Governor said that she didn't believe in what was posted, but who was she to deny them that right, and I think that it was very big of him/her to recognize that. I personally don't think it's very flammatory, but I suppose it's how you choose to see it.

Thanks again everyone!~

You are, Samhain, October 31, the holiday where Pagan's honor their beloved dead and the veil between the living world and dead is said to the thinnest.
Pagan's have 8 holidays in the year, and only Samhain correlates with any of the other known holidays date wise.

:)

Well, technically, no

I respectfully submit to you -

Mother Night, celebrated by Norse and Germanic heathens(pagans) which falls on the Solstice - also the celebration has other nights which last right up until Christmas and beyond.

Saturnalia - pagan Roman holiday, also the solstice.

Easter - Christian Holiday, also Pagan holiday, feast of Oestre (Easter) Norse and Germanic pagan.

St. Johns Eve - celebrated by Catholics and Vodouisants

Walpurgis Night and the following May Day - were pagan celebrations which were also celebrated by the early Christians (well, not walpurgis Night, but May Day was, and in some places, still is)

Now, I KNOW for sure I've missed a few (maybe many) but I got soem of them.

ETA _ I tend to differentiate between the general term "Pagan" and Wiccan, Witch, Heathen, Vodouisant, Santerian, etc... all of which could technically be lumped under the umbrella of Pagan - but whom have very different practices in many instances.

also ETA - most Vodouisants and Santerians consider themselves Monotheists, and would shudder if called Pagan

I forgot about Ostara, DUH... And I suppose I should have said that as no other holidays from Christians fall on the same days as Pagans... I wasn't thinking international holidays, I was thinking well known American holidays.

I would call myself a Witch but certainly not the well known Wiccan.
I personally like that Pagan is used as an umbrella term now. Alternatively I have a good friend who is Vodouisant and she encourages people to call her Pagan so they don't draw wrong conclusions about her.
To each their own!
