I do think it has a lot to do with emotion, and that's something that is hard to get away from.
However, high emotion is excusable in the newly converted or with anyone who is "new" to their philosophy. They are gung ho!! Dang the Torpedos full speed ahead! and whatever other anology you can come up with. Often, they are also the worst equipped to deal with the arguments that might be brought against their stance on the topic at hand.
(Rudeness, however, shouldnt be excusable in anyone. Not commenting on the signage, or this topic, but on the newly converted who believe "any means necesary" to get their point across is ok.)
For those who have, in theory, studied their own religion, and practiced and deepened that religion (or philosophy) there should be the ability to put emotion aside and recognize that not everyone is going to believe as we do. And not everyone SHOULD believe as we do.
That is what makes us able to teach or pass on our philosophies to the newly converted. Without the ability to recognize the difference between "hate speech" and simply getting carried away, we are no good to the generations who come after and wish to learn about our beliefs. It would be hard to wade through all the fighting and name calling and get to the heart of what could be very meaningful to someone else.
For instance, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, for many years, have made it difficult to view Christianity as a loving, life affirming religion. IMO they should both know better (well, Jerry's dead, I guess he does know better by now) than to promote such divisive speech as being proper for today's Christian folk.
Going back to an earlier post I made, about my Gran and my Aunt - The message they have perceived from God's word is not the message that ALL Christians have perceived.
Likewise, anyone who chooses to view them as representatives of every sect and church in America, is equally to blame for the promotion of such divisiveness.
Apologies to the sensitivities of anyone who believes these two men to be icons of their faith. I admit they are not totally bad people - no one is totally bad - but they have shown in the past that they do promulgate hateful speech and divisiveness. There is a difference between keeping yourself and your flock "out of the world" or even in Condemning the World, if that is your belief, and blatantly offending so many people who are grieving, devastated and in need of compassion (as was the case when the Towers were attacked on 911).
hmmm... wondering if I went too far with this post.....
