Sign Stolen?

Mods and all.....please forgive me but I just can't help it.....

"I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison and went to pick her up in the rain. But before I could get to the station in my pick-up truck, I got ran over by a da**ed old train...........

Alright, now that is out of my system. As much as I LOATHE country music, my husband forces it down my throat sometimes. LOL

Well, that is really the reason christmas trees have been allowed on public property even when there have been arguments against it. People have lobbied that a christmas tree is not really a religious symbol. Nativity scenes very often lose in court cases, because it's rather hard to argue that they are non-religious and therefore should keep their place in government buildings or grounds. Menorahs are now regarded by the courts as a non-religious symbol because people wanted to be able to display them in government buildings or grounds. I personally think that is sad. A menorah is a religious symbol to me and therefore I think it should be kept out of government buildings just as a nativity scene should not be displayed by the government.

As to the original topic, I do think that sign was a deliberate attack on organized religion, but like I learned in grade school... sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me, lol.

Ya know, I have to give kudos to the preacher from the church I attended as a child. He refused to allow any "christmas" decorations at the church. He made a point of talking about how christmas is a secular holiday, NOT a religious one and that the bible does not ask/tell us to celebrate the birth of christ. So yeah, the christmas tree is not a christian symbol. Never was though it has been taken that way. I, personally, LOVE my Solstice trees.

I think I would word it:

At this season of THE WINTER SOLSTICE may reason prevail.
We believe that beyond our natural world, nothing exists.
Do good for the sake of humanity, and have values to keep yourself in check. Religion is not for us, and often makes people close-minded and intolerable of our beliefs. We respect those who respect us, and those believe in God, or a life beyond this world.

Most Athiests or non-relious people are always saying that Christian's do not respect their beliefs, so why should they be disrespectful to others? You must give respect to get respect, and that sign is not respectful at all.

I try not to use the word respect too much - it is overused, in many cases (not slamming your answer, I liked it, actually).

I think I would replace "respect" with "Courtesy" or "courteous"

personally, I don't "respect" what a lot of religions teach, but I am courteous to those who follow said religions - sometimes even when they are not courteous to me.

Amen to that chiknmama, (pun intended) I have actually been pursued down a sidewalk getting harangued very loudly at every step when I replied to a question about my own faith with what was apparently perceived as the “wrong” answer by the religious proselytizer. At that point, respect was impossible for me to maintain, and even courtesy was difficult but I barely managed it.

My signiture about compassion BTW does not mean I follow those words perfectly, but it is a goal.
