Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Quote: Yes, white paired to non-white is unpredictable. Every white can give different results as white prevents expression of the other colour and pattern genes they have.

All chickens have either gold or silver (boys can have one gene of each). Melanizers or their lack can prevent or allow leakage of ground colour.

My educated guess is still a guess. Start marking which pen your eggs are from, and that will allow you to narrow down the culprits. An e^b black tends to have a less than pure glossy black colouring, but unless placed alongside a glossy black, it may not be noticeable. e^b is very recessive, so it can hide, too.

there no such thing paint splits there either paint or not paint

Oh ok...sorry about using the term wrong...I thought that's what you called it? So he is just black even though he came from paint breeding? I am a novice...why have I seen people say 'split' to another color?

If I had understood that better I would not have put a black with a white...I knew you would get crazy mixes and I didn't want that...oh well...live and learn...

I think it's perfectly okay to refer to birds that came out of a paint to non-paint breeding as paint "splits". It indicates they are carrying whatever genetic traits make the paint coloring but aren't showing the paint patterning. Would I call a black to white a white split? Or a black split? Probably not. But it's different with paints in my opinion. You can breed a non-paint out of paint breeding to a black or white and still end up with the paint coloring.

I did not know you could get paint out of a paint that didn't color. Love your new avatar!

Hi. I'm pretty new to Silkies but I've been reading this thread and want to thank all of you for the great education. I purchased a gray trio 2 months ago and just hatched 5 chicks from them. One chick looks different than I expected. It has red or rust colored markings. I'll post pics of the parents. Please tell me what you think. I would appreciate any feedback. Btw I'm new to posting so bear with me while I figure out how to post pics.

Well help on this would be appreciated too. I'm doing this from my phone. Meanwhile the pics are on my profile page in the gray Silkies album :)

I know we are talking about black....but thought you guys would like to see something stunning.Karen Larsen's winner from last weekend on Salem Or.

This bird is absolutely stunning. Would he be considered a more feminized rooster? If so, I need to start giving our boys some estrogen so they can turn out like this guy!

In regard to our blacks, it just occurred to me when we purchased the chicks in June, they were black with a light colored downy fluff on the chests and abdomens... almost a yellowish white. I don't know if that is a predictor of the bluish undercoat that has developed.

I am not going to get into the genes that caused that, I'll let Sonoran do that, but they look like my partridge chicks. So I'm assuming they are partridge.
