Silkie saga

Pics
Ok, first for the responses before the "should I freak out or not" part. Argh!

We love seeing bald eagles! I remember seeing them quite often growing up, then it seemed to be less and less often. As a kid I had one fly right over my head, mayne 10 feet above me, so especially being little, the bird was just massive! They are so beautiful!

Yes, I believe she will stay black, so that's cool because it seems to be the only black silkie other than JetPack the frizzle cockerel.

Thankful for the weekend, I managed to get my frazzled self to bed at a decent time and sleep always helps make things less insurmountable. Today, our friends came over, I think I mentioned she had silkies, my TSC silkies seem big to me, she confirmed it. Apparently they aren't supposed to be the same size as SLWs who are 3 weeks older than they are. Hey, know anyone breeding giant silkies who needs a really cute white silkie cockerel? Nu even has the proper toes 😁

She checked out my chicks and said she thinks the feet thing is from a virus, Hoppy is not getting better and not I have another one favoring it's leg and another one looking a little suspect too. Hoppy's one hock is definitely bigger on his bad leg. She said the virus attacks the joints of cockerels then will lead to tumors in the pullets. She thinks it is Lymphoid Leukosis which is what lead to her having to cull her entire flock 😭 she said it could have come from the breeders flock through the eggs to the chicks, and my chicks could infect my entire flock. I've been very careful about washing my hands from the main flock to the chicks, but I'm much less careful going from the chicks to my main flock 🥺 she said I need to cull the two worst chicks. We have a state lab here, I think they do necropsies, I'm going to check their site tonight to be sure. I'm trying not to panic because mayne it's something else, but what if it is??? And what if I've infected my entire flock outside!?! Ugh 😭

I need answers before freaking, not that there would ever be a good time for this, but with all the insane work stress, this is really not a good time.
OMG...Double OMG....I am SO sorry to hear this about Hoppy and the possible virus!! :hugs :hugs Oh this is so sad, I can imagine it's breaking your heart! 😢 💔 This is serious enough I would definitely send off bodies for necropsy, you really need to know exactly what this is! And your friend had to cull her entire flock?? Oh how terrible! Well I am going to pray this is NOT a virus at all but something else, maybe something treatable like a bacteria or something. Good grief, I am so sorry and my heart is breaking for you. 💔 I would definitely do this necropsy asap, and I am praying you have not infected your flock!!!!

Well, TRY and get some rest, your health is the most important thing. ❤ Massive love and hugs coming your way my dear. ❤:hugs :hugs

I found this: Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO), but I can't find information on symptoms, but it does say it can present at 14 to I think it was 40 days old. It's a bacterial infection on the tibia, maybe this could be it? I'm only finding some studies, not the list of symptoms. Still looking...

Maybe it's a slipped tendon? I'm not even sure what to feel for especially since it's been a week. I would be relieved in a way if the two chicks have slipped tendons, and also feel incredibly bad that I didn't figure it out and fix it faster.

It could be anything at this point, so we shouldn't panic just yet. I have a friend that just lost a 10 year old hen with Lymphoid Leukosis diagnosed by an avian vet with blood work. She had never exposed her flock to any new birds having had only this flock. It took all of 10 years to develop into cancer enough to kill this bird and none of her others have or had this virus, at least no symptoms are developing. Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think birds can develop symptoms so fast from a virus transferred in the egg into a 2 week old chick? Other parent/egg transmitted diseases usually take many months to years to show? I may be totally off the mark here, but I am starting to have my doubts. If I were in your shoes, and yes this is important enough to track down, I would cull that little baby and send it in for necropsy. It will tell you all you need to know, yay or nay, and then prepare you on how to go forward with protecting your flock or not having to worry about it at all. :hugs

I checked them and started to write you back that I didn't think it was but wanted to double check, so I checked some videos online, then checked Not As Hoppy, and it's a slipped tendon!!!!! Not that it's super great because they've been slipped on Hoppy for a week or a week and a half. Not As Hoppy maybe three or 4 days. I was able to get it moved into place but it's popping out. Now to splint and pray.

I was wondering about the speed of symptoms too, so starting to second guess the virus thing. I did lose a 2 yr old BR this spring, she'd been sick off and on since last fall, ascites I think.

Oh, and photos. Not As Hoppy (Nah? Lol) is a blue satin.

Nah's hock feathers are at least an inch long, it's crazy! They are longer than it's tail feathers, from the top laying down it looks like it has the tails 🤣

Also, I've been giving them Nutrina chick starter with Fertrell breeder supplement, this morning I did the same and added vitamin D and a B complex. I'll do that for a week and see if that helps. I've never had a slipped tendon before, the grain mites are so bad this year, I'm still not sure if maybe that it ruining the nutrition? But the Fertrell's should help compensate.

I asked the breeder if he had any lameness in his chicks and he said no.

Well this us a good sign, maybe Hoppy doesn't agree as much, :D but for you anyway. That's great though that you were able to get the tendon back onto place! If you can get it in place to stay and wrapped, he should definitely improve over time! Maybe a quarter of a baby asprin too to reduce pain and swelling.

My friend's bird developed tumors in the mouth and throat, which they say is where tumors tend to develop with Luekosis. Not that her bird is the standard on all cases, but it's definitely one that can represent this virus.
