Silkie saga

I have to find a different mash dish, they are standing in their feed still but their feet feathers are long enough they are getting really nasty now. I need a dish they can't step in anymore.

Here is how the chipmunk chicks are coloring, brownish grey wing feathers. I have three of these. The photos make them look more grey, but they "should" be some form of blue.

This little one is growing massive feathers from its hocks, I can recall having a chick feather in here this quickly with such big feathers.

I have several pure white and a few more mostly white chickens. One pure white one is an EE named Cream Puff, she is sometimes white, sometimes clay mud red, and sometimes has incriminating yellow on her face from eating an egg 🧐.

I had to use a frying pan (retired from the kitchen and now a chicken treat pan) to block Fizz to get out of one of the coops this morning. He's such a pain, I'm looking forward to selling the cockerels and locking him back up 😬

We didn't make it to the sale, so maybe next time. But now we're heading to the track this afternoon to watch bro in laws horse race, it's a couple hours away, they just let us know this morning.

I got some chick photos this morning, posting shortly!
Oh no...a frying pan??! Dang Fizz Bang. 😡 What is with that boy lately?! Maybe removing some of the cockerels will help and especially if you can keep him in their quarters. Roosters...

My goodness, they are growing SO fast!! LOVE their coloring and fuzzy feet! :love You are going to have some gorgeous birds there! ❤ Yes furry feet do get dirty and funky, don't they. :gig Super cute though!

Enjoy going to the track today! Are you betting on any horses too? We have a track here too not far from here. I've been years ago but never got so interested I wanted to continue going. :D They have a nice buffet though, haven't been there in years either!

Enjoy your day! :)

🤣 my husband put money on the bro in laws horse across the board so I decided while we were in line I should pick a horse. I picked the #4, then the guy told me it was scratched so I looked quick on the paper and picked the #6, $2 across the board. Then we went out and saw the horses in the paddock, it was a decent pick. It was a mile and 1/16th race, this little horse came from close the to the back of the pack and won! Came out with $14 🤣

We might go back to the races next weekend if he enters his horse again. He apparently hates running on the turf, so he was supposed to be running on dirt yesterday but somehow he ended up entered in a turf race. He never even ran, he just galloped the whole way, interestingly, he was behind but the pack didn't completely pull away from him. Next race will be on dirt. His last race was on dirt and he got third. His sire won the Belmont and his brother won the Kentucky Derby, and here he is loosing a low $ claiming race 🙄 somebody needs to tell him how good he's supposed to be 🤣 last year my sister in law and I gave another of his horses a pep talk before the race, he won. I think this is the secret 😃

The flocks are doing well, the two little cockerels are settled in to their new digs, my 5 freeloaders that I haven't been able to muster the will to send to freezer camp are still looking good but maybe getting close to molting, which them I'm assuming you don't want to butcher during a molt... they might be extending their time here for a few months 😄 if I can ever get the guts to actually butcher them... ugh.

I got a few thin shelled eggs last week, two girls seemed to have some issues, not feeling themselves, laying around more and one had a big squishy crop. They got calcium pills, D3, and the squishy crop one got probiotics. I had bought one bag of hearty hen instead of thr feather fixer or regular 16% layer pellets, we have HORRIBLE grain mites, so I've been going to multiple stores trying to find the least infested bag and only buying one at a time. So maybe they really didn't handle the 1 oddball bag of feed. Lesson learned, back to feather fixer. They all seem back to normal now thankfully.

The pullets are on Purina and I have their feed under their coop instead of in the shop. For some reason the Purina bags don't have mites, I'm not sure if this is a good sign or not... good that the feed doesn't have them, nit have they treated their packaging with something or added something to the feed to stop them? Not sure. Everyone else is on Nutrena Naturewise feed.

Fizzy is out and about cruising, I haven't tried to feed yet so we've been avoiding eachother so far this morning. The little chick that I tried to straighten it's toe, it's still not walking on it and it is completely bent under its foot again. It's eating and drinking so I'm just leaving it alone.

I also think I made a mistake on the colors of two chicks. The one has brown and is chipmunk striped, so I just assumed it was from the chocolate rooster. Then another chick is white with a few dots, I just assumed that was splash. I've even googled photos of splash chicks and nothing registered. I think the "splash" is actually a paint, which means my brown chipmunk is from the BBS pen and will probably turn blue? Maybe?

My assumed "from the chocolate roo" chick that likely isn't.

Oh no, sorry you have some squishy crops! Could definitely be the feed, if it's buggy, it's probably rancid too. I really don't care for Purina but I've used it. I do like the Naturewise layer feed. I also like the Tractor Supply brand, Du Mor. In this heat, feed gets buggy easily, spoils too. Certain feeds don't carry the calcium well either. I am always fussing over feeds and switching brands. Make sure to change brands slowly though, fast changes can impact crops and cause digestive issues. I hope your birds feel better soon! :hugs

Sorry the little guy and his toe is still bothering him. :hugs I am not sure what you can do with it, I think you are right by just letting him be. Hopefully he outgrows this and it no longer bothers him at some point. Does he get around ok though?

You babies are just adorable! ❤ I know nothing about colors or genetic tendencies, they are all gorgeous! :D

Thankfully all the layers are back to normal now! I do see feathers starting to drop so it looks like I have several starting to molt. The last two winters I've had a few molt in January, literally our coldest month and they're running around half naked and not eating. Both winters I've thought I'd loose one of them, but they all pulled through. Lots of days hauling warm mash out to the coops trying to get the nakies to eat something.

I'm not good at poultry nutrition yet, I only know a little. I got some Fertrell breeder supplement this spring and used that for the 4 little silkies ans the SLWs. I have the baby silkies on it too, just a little pinch every day, I'll increase as they get bigger. Just in case the chick feed is lacking something.

The little hopper makes it around the brooder, when I give them a little scrambled egg it hops right up and gets a few pieces. And it gets over to the feed and water, so at least it's staying fed and hydrated.

I'm noticing a few chicks with big feathers sticking out on their hocks, is this vulture hocks? Pics from yesterday, they are bigger today. Time will tell I guess. It reminds me of those cartoon sneakers with the wings on them 🤣 I'm wondering what genetics the satin roo is hiding. I'm super curious how these little ones will grow out and already feeling the temptation to hatch out more from the same breeder to see what results I get a second time around 😁 I agree, they are so super adorable!

Good morning! Glad the flock is doing better now, yes molting season has begun! I had a hen that, like clockwork, started to molt on Christmas day every year. Hard molts too! January is our coldest month, we get down to minus 5 at night a lot and this poor bird would be half bald and shivering! I would turn on the heat lamp first thing in the morning for an hour, she would get right under the lamp, give me that "thank you" look, sigh and bask away. :D

Glad little "Hopper" is at least getting around. Hopefully it gets easier for the little guy. ❤

Vulture wings? :D Like little jet packs or Red Bull wings? Cute! Definitely try different strain lines and hatch various colors to see what you might get. It sounds fun!!

Well I hope your work week goes smooth and fast! Have a fabulous day! :)

Good evening!

What a Christmas gift! Merry Christmas, you get new fresh feathers! Nevermind the long hard process in sub-zero temperatures to get them 🥶

Hopper, well at least 1 of the 16 have a name! Jet Pack would be a good name for the black frizzle cockerel 😊 so maybe 2 down, 14 to go.

We left work early because of the bad storms forecasted so we could get everyone locked up and such. We were thankfully in a pretty darn peaceful bubble. We could see bad swaths of rain, heard thunder, saw lightening, got a slight breeze and a light rain, there was a crazy cold breeze, huge difference in the temperature. I think the ambient temp was in the 80s and the wind was probably in the 60s, totally crazy! I watched the clouds to me left heading north east, then happened to look to my right and the clouds were heading north west. About a half mile north of our house they were colliding. It was the wildest cloud activity I've ever seen. It even started to rotate as it was moving north. Then thankfully fell apart, but it was insane to see clouds right next to eachother moving in different directions. Like someone was madly stirring the clouds. I heard there was a tornado touch down south of us and quarter size hail. So I'm very very thankful we were in a bubble 😳 what a Monday!
