Silkie saga

LOL....and sometimes fertile Silkie eggs can suddenly appear in incubators too. I think that this may happen in my home within the next few weeks.

OMGoodness....those eggs are gorgeous!!! I am so happy for you!! Good girl Cappy Llama. These eggs should help your stress level.

Sounds like Fizz will need to go. Our lives are stressful enough, we don't need to be looking over our shoulders all the time, waiting to be flogged one day. And he could hurt you some day when you aren't on your game. I know it's sad, I shouldn't talk because I have a horrible time till culling out birds. But Fizz has the capabilities to become dangerous, so you might just bite the bullet soon and gently remove him from the flock. You gave him a wonderful life, and he is a gorgeous boy, but he can't be lurking and scaring you to death.

I've been meaning to ask you, how are the two chicks that had the slipped tendons? Were you able to save either of them?

Well get some rest my dear, spend time with your birds, read a good book and make sure to keep breathing deeply to help you relax.

Culling is not something I'm so good at... pretty sure we'll get Fizz and a couple hens processed in a few weeks, but the chicks are still around too. The worst one I really think we should cull but my hubby keeps questioning it since it is eating and drinking, I don't think it's in pain but it definitely doesn't have great qualof life since it can't run around and be a chick like the others. The one I somewhat helped yo get better, I think we'll keep it. I just have to move my main laying flock to another coop, somehow... since their coop is the closest to ADA compliant and then I think the chick will be ok, just a bit gimpy. It can walk on its leg, it just often hops around instead. It's a beautiful blue satin, I need to get photos. So for now, they are all still with us, but

We didn't leave work until after 7 last night, had to support the team over the phone until 11pm then got another call at 5am. Tomorrow my hubby will have to go in to over see some repair work, I'll probably work a bit from home. So much for the weekend but there are things that need done and not many of us that can / will do them.

I can't remember if I told you I can finally tell Tim and Fergie apart really easily! Tim has an all black head poof and Fergie has frosted tips on its head poof! Yes, yes, I need to get pictures!

They are still all so ridiculously adorable. When we go in to feed them they all just patter patter patter with their wee little feet and swarm us. This morning there was a big cicada in the carport so I grabbed it with the kitchen tongs and took it to the chicks. Oh my, that was funny! There was a little chick stampede, they weren't sure what to do with it but they knew they should chase it it didn't last long, it succumbed to the completely floofy cute terrors. What a way to go, getting chased by furry little marshmallows with sharp beaks, yikes! And I know how sharp they are, when I feed mash I've been scooping it from the bowl I make it in to their bowls then let them peck my fingers clean. I'm not sure I'll be continuing that, most of them have been trying to fit my whole finger tip in their beak and really latch on or grabbing a crease in my finger and giving it a twist, they act like I starve them maybe they have some Cornish X in their lineage

Such happy little accidents! I'm expecting to have a few of those magical things happening next spring! My hubby is going to be soooo pleased as long as I can sell them he'll be happy, but the funny thing is, he was so unsure about me getting these silkies and now he's claiming more and more as 'his' that we must keep. This now includes all the satins plus the frizzle. I mean, it's kinda hard for me to say no to him, so if he wants to keep all the chickens, I'm just going to be a good supportive wife (as he had also supported me) and let him keep all the chickens...

It's so difficult to make that big decision. Are they happy? Are they in pain? Are they depressed? You feel guilty if you do, guilty if you don't. And sometimes letting nature take its course is best no matter how it ends up. So yes, I totally get it, and support you both in what ever decision you come to.

This sounds absolutely adorable!! I am smiling ear to ear just thinking about this. Standard chicks are just full of the cuteness as it is, but you get Silkie chicks with their furry feet and the cuteness is over the top!

This describes it entirely! They had no idea these big ol juicy bugs existed, it must have made their day!!!

Chicks do bite hard, don't they? Seems like they grow out of this or maybe they just aren't as ravenous as adult hens?

Not sure who did this, maybe Base? Maybe a SLW? It's a really pale egg, so maybe Base... silly chickens! I had a favorite EE pullet sho would always fly way up to a shelf and lay her egg there, I had to put a game cam in to figure out who was doing it. Her name was Spazzy, she fit that name to a T from about a week old. She unfortunately passed at just shy of a year old, no clue why, she was fine the one day and gone when I got home from work the next day.

Who did this!?! Lol!

Fizz looks like he's mumbling something under his breath at you.... Such a handsome guy, too bad he's bad boy!

Whatever he was mumbling, it was for sure something fowl and directed at me he attacked my shovel again this morning and made his spur bleed, not bad so I think he'll be fine, but he's such a hard head. We avoided eachother while I fed the first two coops, I got to the last one and he blocked me in. I called Foxxy over, he went after her so she spun around, took off, and told me I was on my own. He finally got far enough away from the gate I cracked it open and grabbed the shovel handle. When I moved it be broadside to him he decided to give it a few solid flogs then bit it. His days are numbered... just don't know which one yet.

I just sent 4 1/2 doz eggs off with my mom today for her to sell to her friends. I am going to water glass some eggs this week to save some of this abundance since I will likely get short on eggs this winter. I have several molting already, then we'll be into the less daylight season and bam, egg shortage typically right during winter baking too, I can sure go through a pile of eggs

I got new photos of the chicks this morning, I'll add them in a minute. Their head poofs and beards are growing

Dang Fizz! I know these boys have a job to do, but still, they should be smart enough to figure out we are not going to cause the hens harm or take over their position in the flock. And changing their way of thinking isn't going to happen. Too bad we can't send them in for some counseling or something. Well, you'll know when the time is right.

Yes we are headed into scarce egg season! I bought a dozen eggs yesterday, good grief it feels weird buying eggs. Well, hopefully you get enough eggs to do some baking this winter!

Wow, just WOW!! All your birds are gorgeous! The babies are growing SO fast! They look like quality stock, although I know nothing about Silkies. Love the floofy heads and furry feet!!! Fizz sure looks regal up there. ❤ And I gotta say, Foxxy looks just like a fox!!! You pegged that name. Everybody looks fabulous, thanks for sharing, I got my big grin on now!!
