Silkie saga

Awww.....looks like the boys have a lovely home now! ❤ It's always satisfying in the heart to know they are going to a good home where they are wanted and will be cared for properly.

Yes, Turkeys are huge birds and can be intimidating! I've never kept Turkeys either but a friend of mine does. She keeps a lot of them, her favorite poultry breed. I am unsure of the Toms too so I do my best to avoid them. :D That one in your photo is raising his feathers, he was watching you!

Wow, Cracker Jack has HUGE feet feathers, maybe you should have named him Sasquatch. :gig He is a beautiful boy, love his markings! ❤

Oh I am sorry little Fray isn't doing well today! Be careful with the Vitamin D, it can be toxic at high levels, Im not 100% sure of the exact dose for chickens but just be aware. Vitamin E can be used well over the prescribed levels however. I'd stick with the Poultry Cell and added Vitamin E. I hope she gets to feeling better soon! :hugs

Enjoy your day! 😊
Ah, that's right, I won't do more Vit D. Since it seems to have just started hopefully she will recover quickly. She's always been a spritely little thing.

I tried to do a photo shoot to get updated pics, they were more interested in either me and the phone, or eating. Then 4 huge hawks started circling in the field on the other side of the house and one did a loop right over me and the chicks so I hurried everyone back inside 😬

Skade (I thought it would be a cockerel, but nope, it's a lady! I think... maybe this one and Svanhild need to do a name swap) she is usually far away from me but she was all underfoot today checking me out. She is either a splash with no splashes or hiding partridge genes

Your flock of Silkies is positively the most adorable bunch of birds I have ever seen!! :love How do you stand the cuteness, I would be hanging out with them ALL day long! :D I can tell they are happy, healthy and are enjoying life. REALLY beautiful birds for sure, ❤️ I can't thank you enough for sharing them here!!! 🥰

Thank you!!! I'm trying to keep them all happy and healthy, I'm still learning. My hubby was just commenting yesterday about how spoiled our chickens are, there are "coops" around here that are just a tarp strung up like a tent, others have way too many chickens crammed into a small pen.

I'll let you know for sure if they sell! I'll give them a twist, I've been tilting them twice a day but I was going to look up all the proper storage techniques today to be sure. I was going to add a thermometer next to them too to keep an eye on that.
We hatched all summer but I had to save up eggs as back then they only were laying 2-3 eggs a day and hubby needed some now and then too, so if I got 3, he got 1. 😊

I'd take the two downstairs (60F ish) and put the pointy side down in an 18-egg carton. I'd sit one side of the carton on two bags of rice or dried beans. Every day I'd bring 2 more eggs and switch sides the rice was on. When I'd hit 16 eggs, I'd put them in the incubator, then start a new carton for the next batch. I always hatched between 12-15 of 16. (A couple usually got removed the first week as were quitters or unfertilized.)

Before that, I was keeping them in the fridge and would raise one end with something that was in the fridge. I had read somewhere they shouldn't be in the fridge for more than a week so I'd take them out after 7 days and sit them on the counter and the next day I'd have two more fresh ones to add, so 16 total. I did slightly better using the basement vs. the fridge, but if you don't have a cool place, I'd just use the fridge to be on the safe side.

So, so gorgeous! :love What is the one unnamed one with the brown on its wings? Is that going to be a partridge? It's so unique!!

I just want to cry when I see that. How sad of a life for those chickens.

I know some do it for breeding only, but we're doing 6'x8' outdoor pens with chicken hutches when we start up with breeding in Feb/March. If they had to be in cages, I wouldn't do it.
