Thanks mama2my4. Yeah, my only goal in getting silkies was to have broody mamas since my LF flock seems largely uninterested in brooding. I didn't care about show quality or color. I got these two at 10 weeks old from a good friend whose best guess was they were both girls, although I knew it was no guarantee. They're about 18 weeks now and since posting the pics on here a couple of weeks ago, I noticed JB's comb getting bigger and the wattles having a good amount of red in them so when I heard the first crow this morning I thought "There he goes" and looked out the window just in time to see "Mildred" doing it again.
In looking for broodies, I also picked a Bantam Cochin out of the straight run bin this year, thinking if the silkies didn't pan out, I'd have another shot at a broody that way. No go - he's been a very obvious boy since he was about 3 weeks old. Sigh. I'll get over the disappointment. I'm already thinking ahead to a very pretty silkie mix hen I have and if I put Mildred over her and hatch her eggs, in about 6 months I *might* have a 3/4 silkie interested in brooding for me.
