Silkie thread!

My "Mildred" just crowed.

I was really hoping she was a girl. June-Bug has not yet crowed although from pics here a couple of weeks ago, the consensus was that its just a matter of time. Sigh. Guess no brooding or silkie chicks for me in the near future (unless I get lucky and June-Bug is a girl).

I am so sorry. I know how disappointing that can be. I have had it happen to me a couple of times in the past few weeks. Hopefully June-Bug will be your girl.

Thanks mama2my4. Yeah, my only goal in getting silkies was to have broody mamas since my LF flock seems largely uninterested in brooding. I didn't care about show quality or color. I got these two at 10 weeks old from a good friend whose best guess was they were both girls, although I knew it was no guarantee. They're about 18 weeks now and since posting the pics on here a couple of weeks ago, I noticed JB's comb getting bigger and the wattles having a good amount of red in them so when I heard the first crow this morning I thought "There he goes" and looked out the window just in time to see "Mildred" doing it again.

In looking for broodies, I also picked a Bantam Cochin out of the straight run bin this year, thinking if the silkies didn't pan out, I'd have another shot at a broody that way. No go - he's been a very obvious boy since he was about 3 weeks old. Sigh. I'll get over the disappointment. I'm already thinking ahead to a very pretty silkie mix hen I have and if I put Mildred over her and hatch her eggs, in about 6 months I *might* have a 3/4 silkie interested in brooding for me.

OH no HeChicken! Not your cochin, too! What a real bummer! I picked out two silkies last year from the straight run (which is what started this whole thing) and they are BOTH boys, too. I was sure hoping for broodies, too. Must be the year of the Rooster. I've not had any luck either with my picks. Sorry about that.

he is nice!!

Ok, I have to ask... do you have her in a diaper? My daughter wants to bring one in in the worst way!!

You can use something similar to "Pigeon Pants" to make it so they can come inside! Google "Pigeon Pants" and you will see how they are done. It uses a cut in half feminine pad in a "sling" like pair of pants that keeps their droppings controlled and apparently birds adjust quickly to them. Then your bird can move about the house with out making a mess. Never seen one in person, but you can find out about them online. I saw some used in Mickacoo Pigeon Rescue videos.

Ok, not a Silkie, but this is Mikey, my house chicken, in his Santa suit.
It's a parrot diaper. There are people on this site that make the diapers, look in BST- other, or find someone with parrots that WON'T wear the diapers.

I have a pretty good idea of why I am seeing it from the group of birds in question. The breeder is a sweet heart but doesn't seem to
do much more than throw birds together. I doubt she knows what split wing is...and she sells a LOT of hatching eggs. Oh well, live and
learn right? I will try to get pics today and post here so we can have a wing critique;-)
