Silkie thread!

Jayare's Chicks :

I bought 4 White Silkies about 6 weeks ago then found this thread, Haven't gone trough all the pages but it sparked my interest so yesterday I bought 4 more. A Buff, a Blue, a Black and a Partridge to go with the 4 Whites I already had. Will see how they all look when they all grow up and see what I get when I start mixing them up.

Jayare

Where did you buy them?

Not sure how old they are? I was told "about" 5-6 months old.

At what age should they start laying if they are girls...so far NO crowing just grown up "clucking"

And at what age should I know 100% they are female?

Ususally around 5 months they start to think about laying. They will start to squat when you go to pick them up. With other breeds, their combs get a lot redder. You will only know 100% when they either lay or crow. Their combs are what led me to think that they are all female.

Looks like buff and gray not red or cuckoo. Use sulmet for about 3 days ONLY and then start feeding some yogurt worked wonders on my little ones with cocci. Also now while they are drinking you can use apple cidar vinagar works well too.

I have the ACV, Do I mix it or give it straight?

The one that looks grey has stripes that don't show in the pic. It's at that "ratty"stage. I was going to sell the red/buff one but if it's buff and it survives i'll keep it. I don't have any buffs.

About 6 months I'd guess 99% you could tell if they are boy or girl. Really though I get used to seeing my birds everyday and sometimes don't notice when one start looking more like a roo until I start hearing a new one start to crow. Then I'm like duh and it all seems much more obvious. From my experience you're gonna start picking out the boys long before you'll confirm girls based on laying.

I don't think the ones you have pictured are 6 months old IMO they look more like 4 months. As far as gender though I really can't tell from the pics but they are very pretty and I like how you played with the color. Very Cool

Gray's have peniciling and that is what it looks like to me not a cuckoo coloring. Not sure what ACV IS? I have always used sulmet you mix like 2 teaspoon to a gallon of water. I only use for three days because sulmet can hurt them.

I would be inclined to agree that snow white is a boy just based on the stance/type like joe17 says. Pearl I think is a girl and Blue Bell looks also to be a pullet but pictures are sometimes hard to guess on.

Yes again though, who knows for sure!

I can't never think of what they're called but those longer feathers on their head are a pretty good give away. Only the boys get those. I've been tricked many times but i'm also new with silkies. Just a year. I've had sizzles longer and still can't tell which are what till they either squat or crow. Noel laid her first egg today. She hatched on Christmas and she's a sizzle. I was lucky to get all girls out of the ones I picked to keep. I have 2 black silkie's that have me puzzled as to what they are. They are like identical twins except one is getting horns where the other isn't and it's comb is very small compared to the other. So i'm thinking brother n sister. I've seen the roo breeding either one or both. Like I said. I can't tell them apart except for the comb and I have to catch them to hold back the feathers to see the comb.

ACV is apple cider vinegar
