Left is buff but yes looks red as well I agree. I have one that is the similar darker red buff color but I still call it buff. I'm not sure the progression of buffs as they grow up color wise other than I've heard that they change a lot. The other one I think is grey? Do you see barring on the individual feathers? If not I *think* it wouldn't be a cuckoo. Very nice looking little guys though

Cocci is scary! I'm soo sorry you're going thru this. I'm about to start researching now vaccinating against cocci since my luck I'll be the one having an issue with it next. I keep things as clean as possible but I know it's unavoidable to a certain extent because I was told it can live in the soil and also be brought onto your property by wild birds ( that's true right guys?)
Anyone have any input on if there is a vaccine and if it's a good idea? The medicated feed I quit using since the protein level in the feed available to me isn't very much at all in comparison to what I would prefer. I thought about mixing it with a higher protein feed to raise the levels but then I figured that would just defeat the point of feeding the medicated by diluting it. So stalemate at the moment.

Anyhow, you and I are having the bad luck this season huh?

Next year we will reminisce about how cruddy it was last year ok? Then we will be happy for all the hard lessons learned and pass on all the info we can to help others

Hang in there, PM me if you need help with anything

Jayare's Chicks :

I bought 4 White Silkies about 6 weeks ago then found this thread, Haven't gone trough all the pages but it sparked my interest so yesterday I bought 4 more. A Buff, a Blue, a Black and a Partridge to go with the 4 Whites I already had. Will see how they all look when they all grow up and see what I get when I start mixing them up.

Jayare

Ohh projects!! Fun!

Before my Peepers disappeared (lav bantam ameraucana). I had great plans on crossing her with my lav silkie rooster Richie (RIP) then crossing the offspring back to the lav silkie roo. Sounded like great fun! Still would like to try in in the future at some point when I build my stock back up.

**Somebody turn the A/C on in the southwest please!?!?***

If anyone has a book or info specifically for silkies I would appreciate the referral. I have a sick baby and not sure if silkies have any silkie specific conditions. I'm thinking of how my dogs are prone to hip displasia because of their breed. Are knee problems a silkie issue when hatching?

You mind me asking......
Not sure how old they are? I was told "about" 5-6 months old.

At what age should they start laying if they are girls...so far NO crowing just grown up "clucking"

And at what age should I know 100% they are female?

Ususally around 5 months they start to think about laying. They will start to squat when you go to pick them up. With other breeds, their combs get a lot redder. You will only know 100% when they either lay or crow. Their combs are what led me to think that they are all female.

Good point looking for the squat, I've noticed I can see them start doing that around the 5-6 month mark. I've had rooster squat when I pet them too as well. Mainly the more submissive to me ones. Not exactly the same squat but very similar.

Looks like buff and gray not red or cuckoo. Use sulmet for about 3 days ONLY and then start feeding some yogurt worked wonders on my little ones with cocci. Also now while they are drinking you can use apple cidar vinagar works well too.

I have the ACV, Do I mix it or give it straight?

The one that looks grey has stripes that don't show in the pic. It's at that "ratty"stage. I was going to sell the red/buff one but if it's buff and it survives i'll keep it. I don't have any buffs.

I have ACV but it's doesn't have the "mother" in it. Does yours? I read that putting in their waterer (not in metal ones though). I have this saved as a quote from SpeckledHen on here from 2009
"You really need Corid (for cattle, it's a liquid usually) or Sulmet. Corid is just concentrated treatment-strength Amprolium. Till you can get it, give the chicks some yogurt or sprinkle the powdered nonfat milk into their crumbles to help with their gut, as well as add unfiltered apple cider vinegar to their water, a Tablespoon to a gallon for babies. Then the Corid or Sulmet is added to the water and you remove the ACV."

Do you know how often you need to give them the AVC?

Oh I understand I can never find mine either. I have a card reader built into my laptop now which is nice because previously resort to pulling out the camera phone and settling for cruddy pics lol

I agree with you on the squat issue. I have 2 sizzle blues and one started doing a definate squat while the other would run away. They are the same age, hatch mates. While the one doing the squat and is friendlier than the other I saw the roo breed the non-squatter the other day. The non-squatter isn't crowing either.

About that apple cider vinegar.........do I give it diluted or full strength and anymore instructions for it as well. I'll go out as soon as I find out and give it. I have 2 bottles of it. Don't have sulmet.
