Farmerboy if your birds are suffering from cocci you need to give them Corid or Sulmet. ACV is not going to help them at all.

It's mine that have it - emvickrey

If I knew they had it sooner we could have gotten the corid. But now I have to try what I can.

Post here as many details as you can and I'm sure we all will try and help. Idk that there is a problem specifically with silkies and their "knee" area. What's going on with yours? Sick chickens are pretty universal as far as treatment goes so either this thread or posting on the forum under the Emergency thread will probably be helpful.

This link might help to read thru to find if your problem is already posted or else use the search feature:

If you want a book about Silkies you can try going thru the ASBC www.americansilkiebantamclub.org and ordering the Silkie book (by Sigrid Van Dort ) it's a great book lots of pictures and touches on a lot of silkie topics concerning breeding, colors, traits etc. Not necessarily illness from what I can remember but it's a good resource.

I have ACV but it's doesn't have the "mother" in it. Does yours? I read that putting in their waterer (not in metal ones though). I have this saved as a quote from SpeckledHen on here from 2009
"You really need Corid (for cattle, it's a liquid usually) or Sulmet. Corid is just concentrated treatment-strength Amprolium. Till you can get it, give the chicks some yogurt or sprinkle the powdered nonfat milk into their crumbles to help with their gut, as well as add unfiltered apple cider vinegar to their water, a Tablespoon to a gallon for babies. Then the Corid or Sulmet is added to the water and you remove the ACV."

Do you know how often you need to give them the AVC?

I would just leave it available to them at all times. If they aren't drinking well on their own encourage them several times a day. My best guess is mix fresh daily. I know that is how Sulmet is used.

What is this color called? Her name is Noel and is nearly impossible to photograph.

She stands and walks like that. She looks like she's about to crow. lol

She was mixed with a white sizzle hen and a grey silkie roo.
This fella. He's my favorite and poses for pics. lol He turned around so I could get both his good sides.

I'll go do this now. Thanks Howlong do I need to give them the ACV? These aren't showing signs of cocci but i'd like to catch it if I can instead of just dispatching them as they do show signs.

Well if it was me I'd give them ACV on a regular basis as a preventative of sorts. I've heard of people routinely using it in their waterers. I don't use it I add Oxine to my waterers but mostly just to help keep them clean. So I'm not the best to ask lol

As far as treating them for potential cocci personally I'd start them all on Sulmet asap and follow the instructions on the bottle. I have the dosage broken down into smaller increments if you need it. I hate using medicines on the birds but if I think I'm dealing with Cocci I'd still treat everyone that lives together. Just me though. Follow up with giving them yogurt maybe vitamins since I'm convinced giving them a pick me up after treatment is beneficial.

About 6 months I'd guess 99% you could tell if they are boy or girl. Really though I get used to seeing my birds everyday and sometimes don't notice when one start looking more like a roo until I start hearing a new one start to crow. Then I'm like duh and it all seems much more obvious. From my experience you're gonna start picking out the boys long before you'll confirm girls based on laying.

I don't think the ones you have pictured are 6 months old IMO they look more like 4 months. As far as gender though I really can't tell from the pics but they are very pretty and I like how you played with the color. Very Cool

Played with the Color???

What are you meaning...are you meaning the background or the border???
The Silkies I left alone in the picture (did not alter anything on them) the background and border I messed with...I do Photo manipulation a lot....I have software for it.

No I meant the picture overall like how you made it all pretty. Like how you have Pearl purple looking (unless you dyed her?) and also I assumed you did like a sepia color change or just softened the picture on Blue bell. Since I was seeing a brownish tinge to the picture and the edges looked softened. Really I'm just guessing but I was giving you a compliment!
It's cool you have the software to do the backgrounds and stuff I wish I had it but I spend all my money on silkies! HAHA!
