Silkie thread!

I gots a question, this little chick is ALWAYS looking down, just like in this picture. I can force her head up(gently of course), but she walks and runs around the brooder like this. Is it because she has the large crest or is this likely a deformity. Trying to decide if she will just end up being a pet/brooder in the future.

Thanks Mama2My4 seems that people around me want silkies but they only want the hens...which I'm not going to sell a hen and keep a rooster instead lol;)

I NEVER sell "just a hen" unless all of my roosters have been rehomed. Otherwise you will end up with a flock of roos!

I recently got lucky and someone bought all of my roos (3 silkies and 2 cochins) for their kids. Boys do good together as long as there are no females to "entice" them. So as of right now, I have no "extra" roos. Or pullets for that matter!

Of course, my bator and my brooder are both full, so that will change quickly enough.....

I like having a couple of extra roos around just to have a more genetically diverse line! Our roos have their own pen to themselves, so there isn't any fighting. I agree that I don't want 40 extra roos though - 5 is fine!

We also don't sell hens without roos

I agree. I usually have one (or three) extra.

That's a good point. I do that as well. I sell roosters separately of course, but never sell a hen alone unless it is a dear friend.

Here is one of my 3 months old boy. I like him more and more.
I love those girly looking boys!

It very likely has wry neck. If it hasn't been any worse than this in the past, it's probably a mind case. Most commonly brought on by a head injury. Vitamin E is most commonly recommended for healing but extra vitamins including B12 and protein are also recommended.

Good Morning Silkie Friends,
Today is hatch day and my 4 eggs are hatching!
wee.gif
All 4 had pipped this morning and 2 have hatched. They both appear to be splashes like their daddy. Maybe the other 2 will be blues like their momma?

Oh, and a question about one egg that pipped in the middle and cracked open the bottom of the shell.......Will it be able to zip and hatch or will it be confused? When should I intervene, if at all?

I am excited to let those silkies hatch out some chicks this summer! All your photos are getting me excited! My son really wants to hatch some out, I'll let them lay on some and see what happens!
