Silkie thread!

I just put my 24 Catdance eggs into the incubator! I have my fingers crossed! Those poor little eggs traveled a long way to VA. I sure hope they develop! This is going to be the longest 21 days ever!!

:D     Could someone please tell me or show me where the extra toe on the silkie should be located and if it should be the same size as the others?
I've only seen the extra toe on the foot but I could be wrong :D j/k I think the extra toe on mine is smaller then the rest mine are only a few days old so I'm not 100% on this..

Oh here is some pic's of the extra toe you got lucky this guy crashed hard looked like they were at a party all night he's passed out on his back the other had his head in the water dish lol..

He'll silkie lovers, I need help finding breeders in my area- Sydney Australia.. I have been searching for hours in the net but I can't find any breeders close to myself. Any suggestions? I'd love to buy some silkies :(

Usually if the eggs are bad they will roll them out of the nest or eat them. Broody's are good candlers.

one of my hens rolled one out today and yesterday, candled both and one died at day 2 and the other died at day 6.
I wish my hens candled their own eggs last year. Early summer we stopped collecting eggs and let the hens sit on the eggs. I think we had 5 broody hens at the same time. I went on vacation for a week and when I came back, there were 32 eggs!!!

None of our staff members had been keeping track. And of course the hens were happier than pigs in poo!

Two of the farms white hens, and my black hen, were hogging most of the eggs. lol Thank God almost half of the eggs were infertile. We're not really set up for 32 chicks at one time here.

At least not in the Silkie pen.
Maybe your hen can come teach our girls how to candle their own eggs for future reference?

The silkie I was set to get yesterday decided to attempt to crow (and only 5 weeks old!!) Since no roo's in Dallas city limits, I can't bring him home anymore, and I'm heart broken! :( Anyone know of silkie breeders DALLAS AREA ?

Ok Silkie experts, I've heard legends of how one can keep a small flock of silkies and not have to worry about incubating their other breeds, but since the last time I owned a silkie was 13 years old, I cannot confirm this so I thought I'd ask here.  Is it really the case?  Is it hard to get a silkie to go broody when you need them to be or can you just put a bunch of eggs in the nest and they decide to sit?  Or is it more like, wait til the silkie is broody and then hope you have some eggs to swap under her? It's just something that has crossed my mind as it's a "natural" way of doing things. (And an excuse to have another breed on the property)  How many eggs can you generally get one to brood on (a dozen or so LF eggs?)  Yes I feel silly asking these questions, but was told that this was one of the better places to ask them online and y'all were a friendly crowd that wouldn't hate on an oldtimer with new questions.

Welcome to the Silkie thread :)
Here's my attempt at answering your questions ;)
With mine, if I don't frequently collect eggs, somebody's going to sit. Everytime I slack off, I get a broody. I've given them LF eggs, and they can comfortably sit on 5-6. I've read where some will put 8-10 LF eggs under them, but I'm always worried they wont be able to cover the chicks as they grow.
Don't feel silly asking questions, this is a wonderful group! Good luck!
