Silkie thread!

How old is he/she now? When they are around 4 months, the first thing that I see change is their stance. They become very erect and their legs seem to look longer in comparison to a pullet. Next would be the neck feathers, giving them a shaggy lion-like look. Then finally.. the comb. Post another pic, recent, and everyone can try it again. :)
I think she said they were 6 months old in one of her posts.
At 6 months, you should be able to tell clearly which gender they are, I would imagine.

Any suggestions on the color of this baby that just hatched? Not sure who laid it or fathered it but there a lot of possibilities as my kids collected the eggs and didn't mark where it came from..... It is definatley a pure silkie and has all of the qualities of one. It is jet black body with white tips on its wings, toes, butt and chest and a few tiny spots on its crest.

Those are really adorable chicks and I love the girl in your avatar but I'm wondering why you call her calico? She looks light partridge to me. Not saying I'm right by any means. Just wondering. :D

She actually came from a partridge pen. But if you see her up close, she has more.. immmmm.. spotting than the penciling that partri usually has. I will try to get a pic tomorrow.

Got an odd question for those that show..

I posted pictures of my Blue Silkies a while back, I want to try to show one or more of them but if I am still not 100% on whether they are male or female.. Can I still enter them with my best gender guess? They will be 6 months at time of show so there is a possibility they could reveal themselves but I am just worried I will go to show saying I have a girl and everyone there tells me its a boy :idunno

If you could please post current photos, we may be able to help you. Take close up, clear pics of the combs (hold crest away from the eyes and beak). Also take side views of the beaks, heads and crests.

Thank you both!
I will save the Gray color standard on my laptop for future, but I was pretty sure Curly was a gray. lol I've done so much Googleing and looking at pictures and listening to all the smarter people here on the forum and other places. Majority of people call him a gray, so that's what I plan on calling him.

In the end, I don't think it matters. He's my pet and I thought it would be fun to take him to the fair. This will probably be his first and last time being a show bird anyway.

I'm doing this more as a practise run for next year when my Catdance chickies will be old enough. I wish they were big enough now.
SEE I know nothing, hahaha ~ I learned something today and that is great. I appreciate all the experts who share their knowledge, charts, descriptions, and everything else with us to make us all better chicken lovers. Like I said Curly is beautiful no matter what color he is

My black silkie is kind of like this. A yellowish rump, tips of wings, and under it's beak not on chest or head. Is that normal for a black Silkie? And I say Black because that is what the egg was marked when it was shipped.

Ya I talked to a woman yesterday and said if you wet a rag with formalgahide(sp?) and put it around the perimeter it causes skunks to relocate, gonna try it heck what have I got to loose!!!
I don't know if I would put that around my coop it could adversely effect your chickens and you could loose them? I would do a google search on that to make sure the fumes aren't poisonous to your chickens. I'm organic on everything anyway so I wouldn't use a chemical. We just buried the hardware cloth on our coop.
