Silkies from Garry Farm "BARGAIN" ?

14 out of 18 is fantastic! I have my Garry babies out playing in the grass in their covered "playpen"! I need to move them outside full time, I have just been so busy getting the yard in shape, putting in a new garden, not to mention homeschooling kids and trying to be a good wife! I love this time of year here - the fruit trees are blooming, the air is cool and clear and everything is so beautiful!

I have 18 eggs going into lockdown tonight! I had a crazy day of incubator troubles last week, so I don't know what to expect, but I candled last night, and all looked good, but not a lot of movement. I expect it is very tight quarters at this point, so I am keeping them all in.... I will keep you posted!

Well I did do a clearing out of all the clears/non developing eggs a little bit ago, I ended up with 12 out of 18, which is still a good number. More than likely though it is 11 out of 18 because one of the blues was developing but to me it looks like it is a quitter, so we will see.

I can't believe you already are putting eggs into lock down!!!!! WOW! Time has flown, I'm sure it hasn't for you, but not fair ;p !
Please keep us updated! I have 7 more days until I get to put mine into lock down. How do you lay yours? On their sides or upright? I'm still trying so hard to figure out how I want to do this. I was thinking well since they have sat upright this whole time maybe that would be best, but then again I don't know. I went and bought that shelf liner to put on the bottom of the bator today, I even got their brooder set up today too and planning to get that room ready this week. Right now it is a toy/play room for my son but next weekend I will be emptying all his toys out into his bedroom just until the chicks will be ready to go outdoors and I can give that room a thorough cleaning.

You are still doing fine! For the Garry eggs, I incubated the first 5 days upright, then laid them down. I then hatched them upright in egg cartons with the bottoms and tops cut down (so they were more like "rings". I like the egg cartons as it keeps the first hatchers from kicking around the others, but I think this go around I am going to keep them flat. I don't know....I just want to try it that way. My last 2 hatches with egg cartons, I had 1 egg each time that pipped the wrong end. Both survived but only because I checked them and found it and was able to turn them over. That requires opening the bator which can be bad. In my case, I had no pips at the time and was willing to risk it. What I have read is there is a slightly better chance of a better hatch in cartons.

Hatching can be so stressful sometimes! They seem to hatch despite ourselves however!

Oh my!!!!! that is fantastic!!!!! I can't wait to see pics and there progression, which thread are you doing your updates at? Also, have you posted new Garry silkie pics anywhere? Moved them outside yet? How are they? I bet you are in heaven right now!

Also, I candled yesterday and took out 3 more eggs...
I'm down to:
10RIR (really 11 but I'm 99.9999% sure one is quitter)
12 Silkies (5white, 4buff, 2blue, 1partridge)

I candled and waited for movement, If they didnt seem to want to move I talked to them and then they would move I loved it!
Lockdown day is 2days away on Sunday!!!

One more question lol with this hatch did you lay them on there sides or up right? I think I have decided to try laying them on there sides, I'm so confused with what to do, they've been upright this whole time and almost makes me feel like what confusion it must be for them to then lay then on there sides. I think to much I know!

OOOOhhh...you are getting so close!! I can hardly wait to hear how they do! I laid them on their sides this time. Obviously that worked well. My thought process was, if there was any fluid in the air sac, it would go to the bottom, and if they pipped toward the top - as they usually do, there would be less chance of them drowning. I had quite a few irregular air cells (kidney shaped), but obviously it was ok. There was a time the incubator had a dozen chicks, broken shells, etc in it that I anquished about opening it and taking them out due to the remaining eggs being kicked around so much. I finally did that in small little stages, allowing the incubator to stabilize between times so there wasn't much of a humidity/temp drop, and shortly after the remaining eggs who had been pipped for a long time hatched. I also figure, in the nest, they are on their sides, but I have done it both ways.

On the final candle (day 17) I was convinced most of them died as there was no movement, and even some different looking ones - but I kept them in anyway. I think they are just so tight in there they can't move, and they sleep a lot getting ready. The eggs didn't even wiggle all that much after I locked them down until they were pipping/zipping.

The big girls are out in their coop - which isn't totally done yet, but secure, and they have a small dog house to sleep in! I do put on a heat lamp at night but I am not sure they need it. I need to get new pics of them! They are turning out absolutely adorable! You won't be disappointed!!

I haven't gotten good pics of the new ones yet, hopefully today! I have been swamped trying to get taxes ready for our CPA ( I procrastinated), getting the garden ready, kids, etc...and 18 babies! One has a splay leg or slipped tendon, so being the neurotic lady I am I had to spend hours reading how to take care of it...thus taking up at least half a day. I have it patched up and hoping it works as it is absolutely beautiful! There are a couple of so-so pics on the "hatching shipped eggs" thread.

We are trying the eggs on their sides on shelf liner. Like you, I will take fluffed up chicks out as I can trying to not compromise the others progress. It's getting so close and having definite movement in all 22 I know I will be heart broke if I lose some but I know that's just part of it.

I hope the baby with the leg problem will heal correctly and quickly for you!! can't wait for pics! of both.

Myself, and another person who hatched 12 out of 13 silkie babies just before me had lock down humidity between 55 and 60%. Mine stayed closer to 58/60%. Just a bit of info - all though every situation is different!
