Silkies from Purely Poultry

Just wanted to comment about chickens for backyards hatchery. I ordered 9 bantams about a month ago was shipped out last Wednesday the 30 got them two days later June 1. I tracked them both days while in route to Greenville, SC. I left work Friday early all excited like a kid, got to my local post office and waited for the truck to come. I was there for a hour but I got the call from the post office (while sitting in the parking lot) saying chicks were here. Long story short all of my baby bantams were DOA all 9 gone. I called the hatchery and they are refunding my money but I would have rather my babies. I’m going to try again from my pet chicken. Me personally I will not order from chickens for backyards. Hope others have better luck than I did.

That's very sad and I'm sorry for your loss, I didn't have that experience at all. All 7 arrived healthy and they still are. Unfortunately experiences are as different as people are.... for example my chicks from MPC were TERRIBLE. Received 9 and lost 6.... just chalk it up to bad luck. Happens everywhere.

Thanks it was heart breaking for sure. If my new shipment goes wrong I won’t order chicks online again. I’m having a hard time finding breeds I want around my area that’s why I decided to purchase online.
same here.... and it's just awful when you have a bad experience. I called my post office ahead of time and had them call me as soon as my chicks got there. We live in a small-ish town and they practically know everyone lol. I wish you loads of luck with future chicks!

So why does it keep happening the post offices or hatcheries, who’s fault is it? Is it stress related maybe?
many factors come into play. Weather, stress, improper handling by postal workers, late phone call from post office, or poor hatchery quality and possibly diseases. Since my luck was 100% with that particular company I doubt it's hatchery related. We had some very hot temps here in Michigan during those days so could be weather related in your area? If your temps were real high and your chicks were at the post office and sat that could spell trouble. Then again workers that handle and transport (Not everyone loves animals) maybe there was a fool that just didn't care how the box was handled?
