Can anybody educate me about the single comb gene?

Two of my silkie chicks have single combs. I won't be breeding them of course, but I need to get to the bottom of this. None of the parents have funky combs so this must be a recessive gene?

I got the rooster last fall. I don't know much about his parents, besides that he came from a breeder.

The mom (or moms) is the second generation of my silkies. Their parents all had walnut combs.

So did this gene come from the dad or could it have somehow carried multiple generations to the moms? Will it pop up in the future?
Single comb is a recessive trait, & may pop up from time to time.

There's 4 different gene combinations for walnut.

Here's Single comb genes: rr/pp

The different walnut comb gene combinations:

RR/PP

Rr/PP

Rr/Pp

RR/Pp

P is Pea comb

R is Rose comb

Uppercase is Dominant

Lowercase is recessive

I picked 3 random bantam chicks from the TSC bin when I hatched a lone chick about 5 months ago.
Now I have my beautiful boy Cotton! He's the sweetest! I hardly had to socliazie him, and as soon as I go this out of the brooder, he took a liking to me. He runs up to me and lets me pet him and hold him. Its pretty cute. 🥰
He's recently started running up and pecking my toes and tops of my feet. Pecking being grabbing a mouthful lol! Not sure if its a dominate thing to what, or if he's just going through a teenage state. :idunno
Awesome thread!

Yesterday, I thought, "Are those streamers?"

Today, my husband let me sleep in a bit and let the chickens out of the coop for the first time.

He said, "I got to hear your guy crowing really well today."
Me: "Who!? Which one?!"

I have never even heard him attempt a crow but, apparently, he went for 10 minutes this morning. I was fairly certain it was a he anyway.

So that's one down, 4 to go. Really would love to have at least one hen. 😆🤞

Was told black when I got him as a chick but thinking he is dark blue with that fluff. He is 14 weeks.
Looks blue to me.😊
Blue can vary from so light they get confused with lavender and so dark they can look black. Difference is usually the gradient of color that goes from dark at the head and gets lighter on the body.
