Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

I have one that does that.

A few weeks ago I went to close the chickens later than usual. It was raining. A lot. When I came to the coop, I only found 1/5 chicks under mommas. Then I freaked out.

*me freaking out*

And then I found the chicks. All warm and dry. Under my Silkie rooster who was soaking wet. I love that rooster so much

I am astounded.. Can't think of a more appropriate word.. One of the fluff balls is already exploring, and dad is supervising. It sure looked like a conversation and whispering were involved. Shadow is so patient with the chick.View attachment 3146111View attachment 3146112

Today is day 21.. Poof Poof has left the nest and is enjoying her 'cotton balls'. I removed the 5 remaining eggs, 4 quitters and 1 fully zipped but didn't make it out. Dad went and sat in the nest while mom focused on the prize. Notice how the hens don't waste time on unhatched eggs, but fully focus on the chicks who made it out.. We could all learn a lesson from that. Mara a BCM hen of mine, sat on 12 eggs a full 23 days, and I pulled the plug on that.. but she kept sitting and the other hens donated to her project.. She hatched 3 out of 18 on the second batch.. that was just over 6 straight weeks of egg sitting to enjoy her 3 peeps.

My 3/4 silkie Molly will take new chicks into her brood for a couple weeks after hers hatch. Just go out in the daylight and show her the chicks. She makes sounds of "well give them here" and will come tuck them under her.

She gets any high value chicks to raise because she is very attentive plus moving her and eggs doesn't even bother her. She's very people friendly and seems to get frustrated when she can't get chicks to come near me when they are in the "I'm a nugget and everything eats nuggets" phase.

Either I'm too much to deal with or i need new accountability partners!
Going to pick up 18 eggs shipped from Maryland! Super excited to get some new blood of satins & silkies which will include possible frizzle and showgirls!!!
Most of em I will definitely sell but keep probably 3 of the cutest and best personality...pullets!
But DH did say I gotta go up from $5 a chick to $10 to atleast break even lol! But hey its still better than how I began giving them all away - right?!

Thank You! I know the mom is from Alabama Silkies, not sure about dad as they were gifted to me.. That zipped egg in the previous pic? Already getting some daylight and fresh air. You’ve caught the hatching disease like me! Definitely need to ask more for those quality babies!!
