Just sold the last of the 12/24 hybrid chicks! I kept 3 (for now), Iris (from 12/4), Poppy and Ivy. All girls I am pretty sure (Iris was DNA tested, so I KNOW she is a girl). We sold Paloma.
It was tricky selling hybrids, no matter how cute they are and the possibility of colored eggs. All went to good homes, these last went to a lady for her mother's 93rd birthday present! How awesome is that! 🥰

So half of my silkie roosters don't grow spurs. The ones that do, they grow in a spiral but fairly slow.

This is Leven who is half silkie half ameraucana so his spurs grow fairly quick. I used to trim them because they were growing towards his legs. Both have twisted some and are passing behind his legs now. So I'm keeping an eye on them instead of cutting now.

It's just the weirdest thing on spurs. He has 6 toes on this foot so ignore any weirdness there. That's how he got his name. Eleven toes, shortened to Leven.

😱😱😱
Can he walk well with so many toes!? Crazy genetics.

So, my third silkie pullet is now laying, yay!
I know silkie eggs come in varying shades of white, cream and tan. I was hoping that these would also have some variation. All 3 girls lay the exact same shade!😂
One seems to have some light speckling, but I do not know if this will be a consitant trait.
Unless I see them laying, I will have no idea which one is which. Do any of you have a method? As the chickens are 3 different colors, should be easy to tell which chicks belong to which when they hatch out in the future.😊

For me, finding them in the act of laying will determined who laid which egg.

Doest the dye wear off over time??

Only as they molt. She showed pictures later somewhere. Im not sure if it was in that thread or elsewhere. You might be able to lighten it by giving frequent baths.

My white rooster went through most of last year with a purple bum because he somehow scraped himself on something then got flystrike. I caught it very early and after cleaning him up, coated him liberally with Blukote. That dyes feathers very effectively.
