Just sold my little 8 week old white cockerel and with him went a possible pullet to seal the deal. They went to a good home they'll be cared for so that is good :)
... Can't sell every cockerel with a pullet though so what do you do if they don't sell, any of you eat them? I don't think I could ever eat a fluffy little Silkie! I have only killed one once when it was sick. It was horrible!

So glad you were able to find a home for him! 🥰
Rehoming boys is always hard. I could never eat one of my silkies either (being vegetarian does not help 😂).
Don't think there is much meat on them anyway, probably not worth the trouble!

Yesterday I got my standard chickens moved and now I have an only silkie pen! This is a dream come true for sure!
The silkies are in the white coop and the regular (standard) chickens are in the red.

I make soup. They are too small for much else. Though one year I'm taking shredded silkie chicken salad to my family's Halloween party. They all freak out when they see the meat color.

Warning, most home raised birds don't taste like the mushy, bland, salt solutioned store chicken. For one, heritage breeds are always much older. Older also means actual meat texture. I grew up eating a lot of dual purpose birds so store chicken is weird for me.

Silkie reminds me more of pheasant. I love pheasant, but hubby says small birds are too much a hassle to eat and prefers I prepare them as soup or such. If I have a couple cockerels, I will make a pot pie. Meat color doesn't bother him.

I do if I can't sell them. I can't just keep an excess cockerel, and usually it only happens with the mean ones anyway. Supposedly their meat is better for you than regular chicken meat because it has higher levels of carnosine. It's an amino acid that helps prevent the development of plaque in the body, and the development or worsening of degenerative diseases in general (such as diabetes).

Looks great! I am trying to figure out a way to separate the silkies for breeding this Spring as well.😊

I have found that if I can't rehome them, I post on Craigslist for free and somebody will come take them for meat within a few days, regardless of size.
