Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

So what would I need breed to have blue egg laying Silkies? .. there was a thread that popped up with someone who had Silkies looking exactly like Silkies but laid blue eggs, amazing how they looked no different to purebred Silkies!

I only have two 3rd gen as adults so far. One is silkied and one smooth feathered. They look more like silkies but I am still a few generations off of really looking like silkies. We'll see how the chicks just hatching turn out.

I used wheaten ameraucana because that is what I had and it is pretty easy to get the partridge color back from that breeding. Im not breeding tons of chicks. Just a few and keeping the girls and best of them. It's a long term goal for me.

This little 4th gen cockerel is showing much promise. I'll see how he looks as an adult. He has a 50% chance to carry the blue egg gene. If he does I could use him to help get 2 copies of the blue egg gene in the girls.

So the 2 week olds had a field trip to the big babies area today!
Brought em back in this afternoon due to extreme heat and gave em electrolytes.
They perked right up!!!
This lil one best not be Ponga and better stay Perdy!!!
Had her in my hand and she laid over on her side and started kicking like they do in dust baths!!! She did it like 3 different times then I brought her in to show DH and she quit of course.
She a Satin Paint! 2 large black areas on each wing!
If she is a Pongo and I put her with Daisy my recessive white Satin what would happen?

So it took 4 gens to get to him...wow! I would never make it doing a breeding project like I initially attempted.
He is pretty though!!!

You would likely get paint, white, black and whatever else the recessive white might be hiding.

Silkie breeding question. What color offspring will I get if I breed my partridge rooster with my red hens?

he is mixed colours so you will get surprise colours. partridge pattern on roos is black with red/orange hackles, shoulders and saddle feathers.

Poor quality coloring is pretty common in partridge roosters. It's very hard to get that nice black on the body. At least it isn't the orange variant.

Boy did I luck out yesterday.. Fella named Jerry came and cleared out my bachelor pad 8 x 10' turnout pen.. plus one Ameraucana rooster.. That enabled me to switch some chickens around last night and this morning. Silkie and Silkie mix teens went into the large turnout pen, which left the smaller one 6 x 8' empty..

This morning I moved Mom and Pop's furniture and nesting stuff into the smaller turnout pen, then gathered up the chicks in a bucket, to move them over, then Dad and Mom... Something familiar for them, plus all kinds of new stuff to explore.. More space and more sunshine for them too.

How many here are feeding silkies 27% protein feed? I picked up a bag today for my turkey poults but they will never eat it all... so I'll share with the silkies.

you can add grains, etc to lower protein. as far as I know too much protein is bad for kidneys.

people here feed turkey poults with 21% protein (chick feed). that's all we can find here.

I could also mix it half and half with the 18% feed I get to lower proteins... Always thought too much was harmful... thanks!
