Silky hatch-along and OdoBan on eggs experiment

My incubator in occupied until next weekend and I separated my two pullets to be with the cockerel I wanted maybe a week ago now. I'm saving these ones in case something happens, but I'm planning on starting another hatch the first week in March.

Super tempting to hatch them though!
I've got those paint eggs coming maybe tomorrow, and I should have nearly a dozen of mine from the breeding pen by Tuesday or whenever I set them, then at that point, I too will be saving them up for March. I think it's March 9th we're supposed to set chicken eggs for that Easter Hatchalong.

March 9th, hmm, not sure I can wait that long 🤣 it will depend on what my girls are producing, what the local breeder's birds are doing, and if I decide to buy more silkie hatching eggs 🤔 I was thinking March 2nd.

I got 3 Easter Egger x Chonkers eggs today, the desire to add them to the hatching stash is huge! Today is 20 days out from when I want to set eggs, so I'm figuring that from today on, everything is fair game! I'm getting 2 silkie eggs per day, so I could have close to 40 of their eggs by March 2nd 😆

Yeah, I wouldn't wait for that as then your hatch rate would suffer because the eggs are getting too old. It's always something! I remember once last year when I was desperate to fill an order for a bunch of chicks and took a bunch of eggs out of the fridge that were over two weeks old. I got about half of those to hatch so was pretty tickled!

Chickens are amazing, they can overcome great odds, or die because you looked at them wrong 🤣😬

I don't set eggs over 8 days old. I know a hen can set on eggs older that 8 days and get a good hatch but it seems rare for them to hatch well using and incubator. If I need to have more eggs I'll split the hatch. Set some at 7 days and 7 days later finish filling the incubator. Chicks a week apart integrate well for me.
