I got up 3 times to check the chicks.
Went out at 5 to let the older one out and I shut the door to keep the heat in.

No , more like watching and waiting for her to return.

I hope he will soon relax and understand that she will not return.

When we had to euthanize one of our dogs the vet came to our house and I sat down in their big doggie bed with the dog in my lap and held it until it was over and he/she was gone.
The other dogs were present and we all cuddled together and we kept the deceased dog for at least half a day still laying in their doggie bed so they could come, snuggle up and say good bye.

This way, the remaining dogs did not wait or search for the deceased one as they realized that it will not come back. Somehow they seemed to understand and were more able to process the death of their family member. They would still mourn, of course, as do we.

The one time it was done at the vets office left our remaining dogs in a state of constant anxious anticipation waiting for it to return.

How are your chicks doing?
