Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Nope. Not fresh. Just clean, Kiln dried. Pine of course. I'm aware of the potential problems with cedar chips. (red cedar anyway. I understand white cedar might be ok but I don't chance it even tho we have them back in our woods.) I only use the big bales of compressed chips you pick up at like TSC for my bedding etc. and I make sure they are the ones that have been sterilized. (Told you I was a biosecurity freak

tho it doesn't seem to have done me much good this time).
Another stretch, since they were in the house, is cooking fumes. Not likely since they were in a spare bedroom, but cooking with gas(propane or natural gas) gives off fumes that are toxic to birds.

There were not visitors with children?

It is a very peculiar circumstance in which they died for sure!

was it a plastic tote?

I have had water get down into the shavings below and sit and every thing molds... the whole top was dry and clean...

nope. no tote. My brooder is one of those nylon soft sided collapsible dog pens. the chips were all changed out just 2 days prior and there was no moisture. I know what you are talking about. Had that happen with a prior brooding. I caught it in time and since then I have been careful to not put my chips as deep and it hasn't happened since.

No visitors. I thought of cooking fumes too (think I mentioned that somewhere else?). We don't fry food and the only cooked that pm was fish sticks and beer batter fries in the oven on aluminum foil. I even had a fan on moving air thru the kitchen and out the back door AWAY from the chicks.

Isn't this fun? It's like CSI without the commercials.

BTW - all other birds were alive and well this morning.
Not taking chances tho. Everything in contact with the chicks or their environment is being either disposed of or soaked in Oxine.

It HAS to be something in that room. It had to be something airborne and toxic. Nothing else makes sense.
I am going to tear that room apart in a little while. Right now I have to do something about the migraine I've given myself.

Good news is no roadtrip needed yet. My DH's brother's condition had been a bit exaggerated by an over stressed, very worried, loving wife.
The daughter promised to keep us accurately updated but for now we will just remain on "standby" so I can focus on driving myself insane trying to figure out what happened so it doesn't happen again.
RIP my poor little survivors.

I think your hint is that Migrane...... Do you hve a CO2 monitor... they look like a smoke detector but are plugged in down low. Toxic to the birds headache to the people..... if you dont have one dont strip down that room till you do.

Yep on the CO2 monitor. In fact, we just recently replaced ours. Migrane is from lack of sleep and over working the brain cells staring at this screen for hours searching for some kind of answer.

BTW- this is what I use for a brooder. Really nice because it's easy to clean, folds up flat for storage and I have a second one that you can take the floor out of so the chicks can safely have an outside "play date".

Edit on prior post;
I DID use that thing as a brooder. Last time I saw it the storm that rolled in this morning had grabbed it up from where I had thrown it out the back door and was carrying it across our field. Hope it keeps going. I never want to see it again.

Sincere thanks to everyone who tried to help me solve the mystery of what killed my poor chickies. (and what I did/did'nt do) No answers, I've given up.
If I believed in curses....................................

Sometimes chickens just die. It is very frustrating when it happen, especially when you don't know why.
