Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Not a good morning. My chookie took a turn for the worse yesterday. Stopped eating again and got that "I'm really not feeling well" look in her eyes she hadn't had before so i knew it was coming to a time where the decision had to be made so i told hubby if there's no change in the morning........................sigh. Anyway, checked on her a little while ago. No response to my voice, touched her, no response and she had that "heavy' feel so i told hubby she's gone. I took the dishes out and he picked up the carrier. As he was going down the hall I looked and she had picked up her head! I told him to keep going, she's almost gone, we were just a few minutes early. He'll leave her in the garage until she passes and take care of things while I'm gone. I have to go to town this morning.

Oh well. She had 2+ years of being a real chicken, tho she never was able to lay a normal egg and stopped laying completely a while ago, she was out of that horrible place she was in. It wasn't even a factory farm it was just some guy that had built two big cages, one maybe 10 by 10 and the other was smaller and he had over 200 birds in them!!!! Older birds in one, younger in the other. One big branch for a perch and a 8 pack metal nest box on one wall of the bigger cage, that's it. feed was just put in a big pie pan kind of thing on the floor. No windows and the only ventilation except the back half of this barn had already collapsed. There was no run, these birds had never breathed fresh air. Oh, this guy wasn't mean, just really really stupid. He had retired a couple years earlier, bought this old little farm and after getting back from breaking in his new motor home decided chickens sounded like a good idea.

Took him two years (and two rounds of chick purchases) to figure out he was in way over his head. He didn't even know half his birds, or more, were'nt healthy.

RIP Soup. You had a good time while you were here. In your prime you were one sassy lady and was always Top Hen right up to the end.

Silly human. Crying over a silly chicken. Boy do I make a rotten farmer.

I think who and what we love is no body's business to judge us by. Besides, who here hasn't gotten attached to at least one of our chickens?
Sorry for your loss. You gave it your best.
