Prisms dont work any more.... We are going with a 4x magnifier that will allow her to read her mail and pill bottles. Shes not legally blind yet.... But at age 98 she will be eventually. Those readers that read books and magazines are more thant six grand.... and she doesnt feel justified buying something like that at her age.

Mom and I looked at them and got some info on them for down the road... Mom is 80 and I am 59... Though I know how to tweak this computer to make stuff readable and how to get books on line.... so I am good to go... Mom on the other hand... shes computer savvy but not literate. Meaning she cant leave it for a few weeks and remember how to do something .... Sigh.

Hopefully I will be able to Dart her and drag her up to my house for at least half a week at a time. So I can get some home time...

I hate being the only adult in the family... because I am still a kid and want to play.....

Lots of responsibility and worries..nothing prepares us for that.

To perchiegirl: you are doing a really hard job taking care of your mom and grandma. I lost my mom recently and I miss her so much. Good luck with the reading. Some libraries let you download books read aloud to your phone or computer. There is a library here that does it. It is free. Then yoy could set her up next to the computer and push play...

:hugs

I lost my mom recently, too. My condonlences. Losing Mom is an epic event no matter what your relationship. I miss mine every day and am constantly reminded of her little idiosyncracies.
My friends often ask if I regret not having children.... "No," I reply, "I had Mom." Which is true as she was very childlike in her latter years and even more so when the Parkinsons hit her brain. It was tough to watch both my parents deteriorate, but Mom was the hardest as when she became more dependent our relationship got WAY better even though it meant a strain on both our freedoms..

Thanks we had a melt down tonight.... she hurt my feelings over it all... but I understand shes going through crap her self.

Any way... the Braille institute is free... their library is extensive and they even gave me the steps to access the Library of Congress. We came home with the Book reader and four books.... they are stored encoded by propriatary software and can only be read by this reader or one like it. The books are actually on Thumb drives.... The whole thing is set up for people with limited or no vision.... Each book is read by a professional word for word including the dust jacket. And it takes between ten and eighteen hours to listen to a book in its entirety. When you are done you put the book back in its case flip the ID card over and the return address is right there. To return you simply put it in your mailbox. No postage required

So to check books out all you have to do is request the book or a list of books and they will send them to you...

Once we get in the system I am going to investigate downloading books from the library of congress... That way we can access just about anything that is online there. All as downloads.... What this does for them is not have to produce books and cases and identification cards and the man power to put them all together.

So we will see how that works.
