Also Bobcat and Mountain lion.... Anywhere you find Mule Deer there WILL be Mountain Lion. I personally have seen both.

Bobcat is the hardest to spot because you can be looking right at them and not see them till they twitch something.

Been here since 67. They have re introduced Wolves to Mexico and Baja CA so it would not be surprising to see them eventually. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_wolf

We used to have bears too Grizzleys but they became extinct in the 1800s. But there have been black bear sightings... here is an article
http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/are-there-bears-woods-san-diego-and-east-county-answer-may-be-yes

We also have Ground owls.... Cute little boogers.... they take over ground squirrel dens. Falcons and Golden Eagles.... and sparrow hawks....

Oh and there are wild pigs as well due to intentional release on the Reservation....

The pdfs came from this site http://www.sandiegocounty.gov/awm/animals.html it is far from complete.

My place is two miles from the border and 1.5 miles from paved road.... I have had a Bob Cat take thirty chickens in thirty days.... I have heard Mountain Lion scream in the canyon below the house..... Sounds like a woman screaming with a dog bark at the end... The deer at the time were taking advantage of my alfalfa bales...

The feed store owner lost two of her Ostriches to two Mountain lions in one evening.... He carried the 250 LB Male up over the six foot pipe corral.

So we do have em... Just not in the quantities that Other places do because of our environment.

Honestly I am more afraid of feral dog packs than any full on predator.... They just kill for the chase then find another to chase.... A predator will for the most part take what they need and it gives you a chance to fortify.

Yes, one of the reasons that the longer I own chickens the more I hate dogs. Though growing up dogs would at times kill my family's cattle... The dog would chase a cow for "fun" in the heat of the day, the cow would then die due to over exertion and heat stress.

But deb, the vampire hotdogs are just as bad. :barnie

Seriously that one you guys killed was in milk right? If those babies were dependant like that they would not have been taught to hunt yet... they are gonners. I would be concerned about her mate though.

Bite the bullet invest in the wire you will only need to do it once. Compare the amount of money and potential money you have lost in livestock with a one shot deal with hardware cloth. The other option is to invest in some wood reinforcement in the form of plywood in areas you think cant be reinforced without covering it all with hardware cloth.

Heck I been eyeing buying a roll of my favorite wire.... 1/2 x 3 inch mesh 2.5 gauge x 48 GAW wire.... at 6.59 LF if I buy 50 feet thats 329.50 a roll. https://www.wingzstore.com/1-2-x-3-x-12-5g-x-48-gaw.html

But I have a few other uses planned than just my Chicken Coop.

Yep. Forgot about the bobcats & forgot about the peregrine falcons. We've even had a couple condors (they only eat cairn, but they look pretty intimidating) I've never had any of the other stuff here in north county. I had a friend up in Nor Cal tell me about a pack of wild pigs that attacked them in a camp site. Alfred Hitchcock could have had a field day with that one.

Here's another one. This is my dog Meatball. I call it "Pug in a Mug"

LOL.... My uncle Mitch had a Pug named Manny.... Big ole ex MP with a stogie clenched in his teet and a gravelly voice talking to "The Man"..... Uncle Mitch was the Police chief of Ridgecrest....

that was what... seventy two or three. back when fuel went from 75 cents a gallon to1.50 .

I am awaiting a thank you card on this. We could not kill the miserable beasts here until a couple years ago, "they" said we did not have enough and they were protected. BUT "They" managed to trap and re-introduce our beasts all over the country..... "They" still owe me for 150 sheep the monsters killed in the 80s. I have a feeling I am never going to get paid...

When I am sure the statute of limitation wolfacide, I will tell you a sad story about one of the sheep eating monsters!

BTW I hate weasels too...... I am an equal opportunity hater.
