I don't care for people smoking cigarettes around me. I recognize their right to smoke in certain areas but am glad that it is banned in restaurants and stores.

I think it is ridiculous. Tobacco is a legal substance. If they want to ban smoking in bars and restaurants, they need to make it illegal. But, no, they won't do that, because tobacco is a GOLDMINE for the government. Maybe they should also outlaw drinking in restaurants. I mean seriously, more people are killed by drunk drivers than by second hand smoke.

I smoked long ago when a teen and stopped thankfully when pregnant. I am so glad I did that was almost 19 years ago. Now my son is a smoker I try so hard to change that but I can't it makes him happy for now I guess. He still is not allowed to do it in my car or house. If he rides with me he needs to shower and have clean clothes on. I won't ever smoke again and I don't go or associate around it. We have some smokers in our family but they do it outside and away from those that don't smoke when we are together at family gatherings etc. No smokers in my house and not allowed to smoke in my car, house, etc.

Please dont think I am stirring the pot... I just want to show you an example of a day in my life and in the lives of many others...

I go to work.. have to wade through a cloud of smokers huddled at the front door.. that will trigger a migraine and depends on if there are heavy perfume users there too it may even cause my breathing to become labored.

I go to my floor (I am a nurse) and a family member of a patient who just had a smoke walks past another patient stinking of smoke and or perfume then the o2 sensors start to alarm because the smell has restricted the airway of a 15 year old girl who is a severe asthmatic.

If the smoking JUST affected you... then you know what.. go for it.. but sadly it does not... it affects everyone around you some in major ways, life threatening ways and some not so much.

Then, again, the issues you mentioned are not in any way solved by prohibiting PUBLIC smoking, but would call for a complete ban. Which I can never see happening.

Really? How about prohibition? (not that it worked, mind you, but people (such as those who passed and supported that law) really don't change that much). I can easily see a parent who continues to smoke around a child with severe asthma or other breathing issues being charged with child endangerment--can't you?

We are in 2 totally different countries but her its almost banned here totally...
we cant smoke in public places.. (the government is working on bans for beaches and parks) total ban on smoking in your car if you have children in your car. no smoking within 10 feet of the entrance to a public place... so like the mall, there is no smoking at all allowed on hospital property, work places are to be 100% smoke free and if an employer sets up a smoking area for the smokers it cant be enclosed it can have a roof but walls must be below a certain level (I think lower then 4 feet dont quote me on that though) for a while when the ban when into place coffee shops and restaurants made enclosed rooms with separate ventilation... government nixed that idea.

Consumption of alcohol is the same here in Ontario... not in public... even on the beach (not that anyone listens to that one though..LOL)
