Times are changing....slowly but surely. 6 years ago I worked in a program with victims of crime including Family Violence. One of my most memorable moments was a non-custodial parent who REFUSED to not smoke in the presence of their severely asthmatic child. This meant that every other weekend, the child was in the ER, sometimes courtesy of the local Life Saving crew and an ambulance ride. I petitioned the court on behalf of the custodial parent for an Order of Protection for the child. The Order stated that if the parent smoked in the presence of the child, they were in violation of a court order. Next time child went for a visit, parent smoked, child went to ER, parent went for a ride to jail courtesy of local Law Enforcement.

They are also talking about not allowing someone to smoke AT ALL if you live in Santa Monica. To me that is just out there crazy with the control issues. Here is CA smoking has been banned at all businesses and restaurants and bars since about 1982. It is not a problem for me as it is normal here, as you know.

But banning smoking for an entire city? Give me a break.

How would they enforce something like that? Suppose they could issue the ban, then search the entire town, and then just have to search all people and vehicles entering... maybe have a hotline so neighbor could turn in neighbor. Really, seems like preventing possession within the city limits would be the only way to assure that no smoking occurred. If you got 'em, smoke 'em you know?

Kinda like here in Fl:

Fireworks, because July and January are often dry these days there is a "permaban" on most combustibles unless its really been wet. (outdoor fires, fireworks)

Duval county law disallows the firing of any fireworks that are 'self-propelled' or 'launched' or produce 3 foot spark or greater...

But its allowed to sell, transport, keep fireworks, just not use...

Really I can buy it, own it, keep it but never use it??? Really?

And I would like to see bans in place here enforced better myself (asthmatic).

Sooooo. after reading "most" of this I feel rather beaten down being one of those horrid smokers. My question is...to quit. the costs are outragous..and this IS an addiction..why cant they "whoever they is" provide free or low cost products to help us stop? They do it for drug addicts and alcoholics..why not us? all you out there who say.."just quit" .....not that easy

Smoking ban then fat food ban then extreme sports ban then anything someone thinks is stupid that they don't do ban. Why not ban irresponsible people oh gee that would be intrusive. Now here is a good one I quit smoking then I jog or ride a bike along a highway breathing car exhaust brake and clutch fibers risk getting hit by a car take purposefully made big diesel exhaust hits by folks who do not like cyclist, maybe smoking ain't so bad? I do agree that if big government is gonna tax it they should not have a say in it or use my tax dollars to poo poo on it.
