well, yesterday we had our biggest snowstorm yet this winter and the girls clearly aren’t too happy about the damage done (neither am i, i’m quite grumpy) but this is what happens when you repurpose old planks and wood instead of buying new, in better condition stuff i guess. a couple of the boards on top of the run couldn’t handle the weight & they broke. not sure how i’m gonna fix it because i don’t know how to build anything myself but i’m sure i’ll figure something out. these pictures were taken before i managed to get most of the snow off the top. on top of that, i also accidentally cracked an egg this morning- so i guess you can say that my day has been a little crappy

For the last few days we too had storms blowing and lots of snow, which kept me on edge and busy sweeping it off our coops and impromptu aviaries (because of avian influenze we have to keep all poultry penned up), so I can relate. The tarps covering the aviaries would not hold the enormous amount of snow and I have to refit them over and over again. :barnie

that sounds horrible! snow is such a pain. this is the most snow we’ve had all winter- we’ve honestly hardly had any up until now, the most mild and snowless winter i’ve ever seen. before it would just fall and then melt again in a couple days, but i have a feeling this lot is here to stay. it’s my first winter with chickens, so it’s definitely an experience

I'm sorry your day is off to such a bad start. It's been much the same here; I was soooo happy when I got through 2020 only having to shovel once to get out of the driveway. And January was relatively mild. Then, February roared in with snow, 40-mile-per-hour wind and frigid temps. It's nerve-wracking to worry about your birds' health and safety, I know.

I am far from an accomplished builder, but you might be surprised at what you can do with scrap boards and zip ties. They make extra-long Xtreme ties that are good when it's 40 below. I have used them often.

I hope your day improves! I have just come in from an hour of digging out my truck, which I only use about once a month to haul hay. I am planning to pick up bales tomorrow when it is a balmy 10 degrees -- ABOVE zero, for a change. Remember, spring Always arrives eventually.

i’ll have to look into some of those! honestly zip ties are a life saver. i patched it up for now, i’m hoping we don’t have many other snow storms like this- i’m going to try to be more vigilant with knocking the snow off the netting so that it doesn’t build up too much. it’s surprisingly not too cold here today so some of the snow is melting, which makes it 10x worse because wet snow is SO heavy. thank you so much for the words of reassurance! definitely need it this time of the year. you have no idea how ready i am for spring to come

Our first winter at this current house the ladies were stuck using their little prefab coop (we moved dec-jan.) We were having an extra wet winter, new yard was all mud so I put up a pop up in front of their coop for a bit of a rain free space, luckily i didn't raise it up...
Over night rain turned to snow, something that is very rare here. I woke up to over a foot and the canopy which had first been swamped with water had collapsed. Took me 2 hours to dig out enough very heavy snow to be able to open the pop door to at least let the girls into their little run. And another 45 min to pull enough of the top away to keep any of the water under the snow from heading their way and be able to open the run door to get them fresh food and water :he
