Do ALL of you do all of the incubating and hatching in the same bator? Or do you pull chicks out as they dry? Single hatch day or staggered? Guess I'm still an amateur too.

When I have a single hatch - all due on the same day, they can stay in the Darthbator. If I have a staggered group - and I do now. During the last three days - I move them to the Uglybator for hatching.

The first hatched chicks HELP the others to hatch by rumbling around bumping and peeping and tumbling the others. They don't have enough mass to hurt one another and the added stimulation often will help weaker ones to hatch. Snatching out chicks drops the humidity reducing the chances of the others hatching. Bumpering can assist another chick that is having trouble zipping. The sound stimulates all of them.

In a system where tiny differences can mean life and death - letting a chick bang about and NOT opening the bator is the better and more effective, safe option.

I have some of DispsyDoodledoo's Ameraucanas in the bator!!!!!

I learned a very good lesson on my last hatch! DO NOT open the bator when they start hatching!!!!!! I had 15 Blue rocks from Halo, and decided to see if what everyone was saying was true. I had a BYC swap that day which kept my mind off the hatching, and when I came home, I had 5 little peepers. I forced myself not to take them out like I usually do, and all of the rest them hatched!!!! Hard as it is, I learned on that hatch NOT to open the bator and take them out as they hatch. I had a 100% hatch rate this time. My last hatch was 50%!!!!!!! DO NOT OPEN THE BATOR!!!!!LOL

All that I have for now is 11 runner duck eggs, 8 call duck eggs (shipped), 4 bantam/frizzle/naked neck chicken eggs, and two robin's eggs.

I have one baby robin that I'm caring for currently, and hopefully the two younger eggs will hatch. The runners are pipping internally as I type this, the call ducks are due on the 21st, and the chicken eggs are due on the 29th. I'm going out of town on the 30th, so I don't want anything to hatch that day. I will also be going out of town for 3 days in June, so I'll need to be careful when I set more mallard eggs so that they won't hatch while I'm gone.

Enjoy your hatching everyone!
Emily
