Thaw it?! I can't even see it. There could be a colony of C.H.U.D.* living down there under the snow for all I know.

*To anyone who knows what C.H.U.D. are: You're old.

well from my recolection here is what it is!

C.H.U.D =Canibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller.

Just add me to the old folks home! LOL

If only I knew your home addresses and owned a huge dump truck, I have an idea for a practical joke that would go down in BYC history.

Thanks for the great idea! I've actually been planning a duck pond, and was contemplating some sort of underground root cellar/bomb shelter. Seeing your work is motivating me to do something! The ground is hard clay here, and definitely not frozen! I dunno know if the walls would even be an issue here--I think the caliche underground is already as hard as a rock. You got me thinking now...

I have dreamed about building my house into a hill so that 3 sides are in the ground. I have read that it is a constant 65 degrees year round.
I thought that this would be a good idea for a chicken coop but not having a hill to build it into, I have been trying to figure out how to do this.
I would love any suggestions on out how to use the existing coop as the top over the underground part. My main problem is the door and how to do that so that both my chickens and I can enter and exit.

There is a good article "The Solar Chicken Coop" by Steve Schmeck that was originally printed in "Backyard Poultry" June, 1980.
