So sad and so so so very preventable - auto's & cell phones don't mix

This is such a terrible loss, and 100% preventable.

Im a young guy, but I never text/talk while driving unless I have my headphones in and talk that way. If someone texts me and I am at a stop light, I will reply back, "Driving, text you in 10" or something like that... but Im not going to risk my life for a message.

Scare tactics don't work, that has pretty much been proven from Dr. Ed. films. If people are stupid then they're gonna get removed from the gene pool, the trouble is they take other, innocent people with them. One thing that has at least scared enough people into using seat belts is strict enforcement of the laws but, judging from the number of people you see driving and talking, that isn't being done.

i text, but never while driving...why? because i cant drive! also because i text from my iPod which needs WiFi!

That is sooo sad and most definately preventable. The laws need to get alot tougher. Driving requires full concentration and the ability to be a 'defensive' driver. No one can do that if they are texting, eating/drinking, talking etc. All anyone has to do is just pull over until the call/text is made, the drink or food is consumed and then be on their merry way.

You know the bad thing is she's young and still in high school, and I'm sure her parents told her several times not to text and drive. After teenagers become familiar with driving they're gonna push their luck as far as possible by breaking rules! Someone mentioned earlier about eating while driving, well for women what about make-up while driving (seen that several times). I get Cosmo in the mail each month and they did a survey and several people not only talk/text during driving, they change clothes/shoes, and even READ!!!

But since texting is a sure cause because they see it on the phones that's the only reason we hear about these accidents. Also, I've heard that driving while tired causes more accidents than driving while INTOXICATED!

Actually, they have proven that headphones don't make it any safer. Just more convenient. The actual act of carrying on a conversation is a distraction. Your mind isn't connecting the car that's running the light in front of you with what you are seeing. As previously stated it's lack of concentration. Of course talking to someone in your car is the same thing. That's why they have laws in a lot of states where kids under 17 can't have passengers under 21.

Texting is by far the worst though. Dialing your phone, even with speed dial is dangerous. The average text takes your eyes of the road for 4 seconds. You go pretty far in 4 seconds.

My young 16 yr old DD just got her license yesterday and I for one am scared half to death, I have written up a driving contract for her to read and sign, from me to her. Perhaps this little thing will help, other than that the only thing left is to be a mean ole Dad, and I can't do that to her, she's a good kid but it still scares me.
