I had a run-in with our barred rock roo last night. We were cleaning the coop out before winter and all the chickens were loose. I walked over to pick up the shovel and before I knew it, I was under attack! A swift kick and...he was back for more. Another kick...and he didn't get the hint. NOTE: I did not kick him hard enough to hurt him - more of a push than a kick. But after 10 times he didn't get the hint. Yelled for DBF who walked right over and picked him up without a problem. He spent the rest of the time in a cage until we finished. He just hates me.
for me, I never again want to gamble on hatchery breeds of any kind. The eggs I've gotten from BYC members and Eggbid have hatched the nicest, sweetest chicks. Can't say how the roos will turn out since they aren't old enough yet. They are BBS Ameracaunas & Marans.
On the other hand, from hatchery chicks I've had both in the past and now, I would never have SLW - she was mean, wild and nothing ever did tame her down.
THe Blue Andalusian I got this year -- that was feathers down the meanest & most aggressive roo I have ever raised, & he was handled daily just like the others (2 EE's & a cuckoo Maran, both of whom are the sweetest chickens you could ask for--they all lay an egg a day altho the marans' egg is only as dark as say, a buff orp or australorp egg-but it's big! - & the EE's both lay nice sized green eggs).
I am sporting a small scar on my upper lip where the Andalusian roo attacked me without warning. He made good gator bait.
not sure if I said this.. But I won't have a Cornish-X roo again unless I plan to eat it. He got mean and bullied everyone else his age. (they weren't Cornish-X) For a while, I was afraid he was even going to try to eat the 2 other chicks that I had. They are some serious eating machines!
I don't know if I would have RIR again. They are lovley if they are the ONLY birds you have. They seem to want to attack every other thing that is not a RIR.
I would have to say RIR, Black Sexlinks and Red Sexlinks. They are not mean to us per say. Even have one RIR hen that is a begger of attention. Rides in the polaris, rides on or chases the muck wagon, and even falls asleep in your lap. However, they all are so mean to our other chickens. And the Black sexlink rivals our silkie in broodiness. And she isn't even a year! LOL
We have two leghorns (one is Ideal 23something) and the kids love them. They don't like to be caught or picked up, but they are comical little hens. They both come when they are called and both will eat treats from your hand. They are always doing something to make us all laugh. I really don't mind them. Wish they would consistantly lay in the nest boxes though.
Our favorites are Orpingtons by far. Then close seconds are silkies and Speckled Sussex. Our Speckled Sussex roo loves to knock on my front door for treats when he is free ranging. LOL
My Silkeys are pretty, but boring. Kind of beauty queens with brain damage. With constant attention they are improving but all the others were interesting or friendly from the start. -----I also see that sex-links are taking a hit here---my black and reds were charming active birds with personalitys.
