So......what breed would you NOT have again----which ones didn't stick

We must have just gotten some bad ones. I know everyone on BYC speaks so highly of them so I'm surprised too. They're the only ones in our coop that have feathers.

Wow, this thread is all over the map! What one person loves, the next person detests! I've seen several say they couldn't stand RIRs. Mine are curious, mostly friendly, and a couple of them like to sit in my lap while I'm watching Chicken TV. Mine are at least friendly enough to eat out of my hand, tolerate some petting, and let me cuddle them when they're getting ready to roost. My RIR roo Sarge went through a bit of a mean spell when I introduced the youngsters (7 Australorps, 6 RIRs, 6 BOs, and 2 BRs) to the adults, but once he had them convinced that he and he alone was top roo, everything settled down very well. The Australorps are a bit too pushy with the others, thinking that they (the aussies) should be FIRST to eat and LAST to leave the food, only when their crops stuck out like grapefruits... The buffies are sweeties and will be lap chickens occasionally. My BRs (one hen, one roo) are both sweeties, but hands down, the MOST friendly and cuddle-babies are the younger Golden Comets (and that could be more age-related than breed). Of the BB Red trio, the roo doesn't much like to be picked up (but then again, what roo really does?), but will tolerate some cuddling. Once I actually have them in hand, the two girls are very sweet and will just settle down & go to sleep.

ETA: my RIR roo and SLW hen are from a private farm, my RIR hens are hatchery (but from what I hear, VERY nice! DARK mahogany, shiny feathers), BOs are hatchery, BRs hatchery, AusLorps hatchery, GCs and BBReds from farmers/breeders I met at the Mayfield KY Trade Day).

Minorcas are flighty, but bigger than Leghorns. I like the "challenge" of them. If I'm going to wash a bird...I want a fight on my hands! lol!

White leghorn. I only got one, and sort of by accident. She was an idiot and forever flying high into trees, even with her wing clipped. Raised by hand like her flockmates but the flightiest, pecking-est bird who would run the opposite direction when I appeared. I wouldn't wish ill on any chicken, even her, but when she was unfortunately taken in the early evening by a raccoon (before I gathered the hens into the coop), I did not weep.

I will never, NEVER have Buff orpingtons or Barred rocks again.

My first BO was MEAN. Sweet as a chick, then suddenly he was devil chicken! Hateful, aggressive, would keep food from the girls, would terrorize them, and was VERY rough with them. Now, his son (BO x RIR) is the same way.

My BR girl is so bland, i couldnt bring myself to name her. My mother ended up calling her DD. She can also be aggressive.

Our unfavorites through several hatchery batches:
silver penciled hamburgs - flighty, short-lived morons
red sex-links (Red Star) - no personality, short-lived
brown leghorns - terrified of us, not very sturdy

Breeds we've had good luck with over time (haven't had any roosters, however):
NHR - always have several, inquisitive, quick-witted, fairly friendly, help me with the gardening, long-term layers, great at finding bugs
BR - gentle, often the easiest to tame if I have the time, good layers
BA - gentle, good layers, don't pick fights (almost a push-over)
BO - excellent all around! gentle, tolerant, friendly, was still laying (until shorter days) at 6-7 yrs old; wish we had more!

Black Australorp. She is pretty. I love her. But.
She is a snobby thing.
She is the high school cheerleader of my group. And MAN does she have it bad for the captain of the football team. My Partridge Rock Roo.

Everyone else. My Buff Orps and my Black Cochin(standards) I adore. Even my shy Vivian aka Boots(B Cochin)
