SOS PLEASE HELP DAYOLD DUCKLING CRACKED BILL

@Ursuline Chick i really cannot thank you enough, especially for mentioning this in the other thread. thank you thank you thank you i am just so grateful for you and @gtaus’ help and kind words. Lil guy is in a warm dark and quiet incubator where he will stay until i can get to the vet tomorrow. I’ll let him rest and i’ll try and do the same. thank you both so so much. woof what a night
@graypes You are welcome, it's just what most of us try to do here, take care of each other and our animals. We share our good times and our bad times.
We also like to have members, like you and @Suprasoup , who help to make this the great site it is.
When you get a chance checkout the thread Duck fanatic here. I am truly green with envy at what Suprasoup has built. It is really a great and fun look at the pictures of what can be done. I could so easily spend the day out there with a cold lemonade :love

@Suprasoup omg thank you SO MUCH that is really reassuring! I’m going to let her rest tonight and in the morning assess if i should go to vet or not i am somewhat hesitant about the vet bc there is one “over-enthusiastic” vet tech who last time was more interested in physically forcing my two scared ducks to kiss multiple times than assessing the one ducks leg injury and doing the intake forms. it was truly a bizarre visit lol. but if lil ducky is in bad shape tomorrow i will go and put my foot down against any funny business and make sure it gets the treatment it needs

um.. well first of all really hoping for the best for your little duckling.. second of all.. is there any way you can find a different vet? I understand that's not always an option though

From the picture, it appears there is a hairline crack proceeding on the other side of the main crack, so my main concern would be preventing total detachment from occurring. If you have access to a veterinarian, it would be best to leave the area alone until it can be examined. If you can't get the bird to a veterinarian, glue could be placed over the cracks to help keep the piece in place.

Ideally, for glue, we would use surgical glue (tissue adhesive) as it is not damaging to the tissue cells like normal super glue is. If not available, super glue may work, but in either case, it should be applied topically, as when placed deep into tissue it can affect epithelial migration over the wound site.

Long-term considerations may include ensuring the ducklings feed, and water dish is fairly deep and wide for easy eating and drinking. Wetting down the feed may also allow easier eating, and decrease the amount of damage that may come to the bill. Waterfowl possess sensory organs most distal on their bills which consists of a plethora of nerves; since this may be stressful for the duckling, starting her on an electrolyte for a few days may help correct any fluid or electrotye defictes.

@Isaac 0 oh my gosh this is amazing literally everything i needed to know!!! I’m off to the vet gopefully good news will follow @Miss Lydia thank you so much I will check right now where to find it!!!

I cannot thank you all so much for coming to our rescue. hopefully I’ll return with some good news
I saw this last night as well, but couldn't comment as I was on my phone and wasn't signed in. I didn't have anything other than support to offer. Hope everything goes well at the vet.

Hi all! Forgot to update! So my major freak out was soothed by the vet (for $110 :he ).

The duckling had split his bill through on one half but it is hanging on on the other side.
Vet told me since the crack had not reached the growth plate, the duckling should recover, and fast too! She did mention that there may (or will) come a point where the duckling sloughs off the cracked off bit but it is (or should be a natural part of the healing process). She'd never seen a duckling so young (by the time of our appointment he was 18 hours old) with this type of injury so she wants lots of pictures when he heals!

she gave me Zymox (I believe available OTC for around $15 USD) which seems to be an enzyme that promotes healing and doesn't break down waterproofing like Neosporin does (her words not mine). The duckling was in a great deal of pain, sleeping a lot, but with a day of TLC, he is back to being a happy lil duckling! I've isolated him from the rambunctious crowd with a calm duckling and now you can't even tell he is injured! He is eating crumble mash (that I mixed with save-a-chick electrolyte water and is already growing! WOOHOO!!!

Thank you all so much for your advice and kind words! Chomps (the duckling) lives to see another day yippee!!
