Sour crop

Has anyone suggested stool softener plus coconut oil for impacted crop yet? I've had very good success with that for a combo sour/impacted crop, followed up with gentle massage every half hour. I treat the impacted crop first to clear the obstruction. Then I treat the sour crop over the next week.

I don't think the crop is impacted.

She just pooped and it's rather white and fairly small. She ate the half hard boiled egg I offered her with the monistat third in it like a madwoman, though, so her appetite is far from gone. She does sound very gurgley though.

She's in the garage with a heat lamp and two other hens, so hopefully she and the drugs will spend a night happily healing. :)
I hope she is doing well! Glad to hear she is getting better!

I am dealing with a doughy, yeasty crop as well right now. I have had my girl on Acidified Copper Sulfate, but it just isn't powerful enough to beat this case. I have stepped it up and I may be making head way... Jackson, add this to the mix of meds....a squirt of lemon juice and an 1/8 teaspoon of Cinnamon, 2 times a day. Sounds like simple stuff, but it helps to dry out the yeast in slow, sour and doughy crops. Some of these infections get so out of hand, even if you catch them on day one. My girl is on day 10 of treatment. :hmm Chalky type poop is a sure sign on a yeast infection.

And of course it helps to be able to figure out why they have a yeast infection in the first place. Sometimes its on overload of worms or Coccidiosis, could be internal laying, even tumors. So many things can slow a crop down enough for it to get yeasty. In my girls case, she is a feather eater during molting season, she had a feather impaction and it turned into a yeast infection. EVERY December this happens to her. Good luck and keep working on her!

Hello everyone! This morning she sounds less gurgley, but her crop is still quite big. It does feel less squishy than before, and is hanging quite low. I’m getting the nystatin tonight, so I’ll switch to that, and in the meantime I think I’ll offer her a little olive oil (will try to find oregano to add to it). Perhaps I’ll try a crop bra too, if I can make one!

Definitely get her into a crop bra. Help support the crop tissue. Crops stretch easily and if they hang too long they can become pendulous. Bras also help keep fluids moving out of the crop faster.

I came up with a simple crop bra pattern. It's a simple 4" x 4" square of sturdy cloth with twelve inch long by one inch wide straps attached parallel to the cloth square. If you can attach Velcro at the ends, it will make it easy to put on her and defy attempts to get out of. It involves some sewing so I hope you're able.

:thumbsup

Using a criss cross pattern over and under the wings and over the back really helps keep the bra in place.
