Sour Crop

Well if she doesn't improve I am going to try it, hope she doesn't need the bra too!

I think sour crop takes a long time to get rid of whatever med you use. I wouldn't give her things that are not soft foods like any kind of grains or seeds that she can't handle. I would stay with soft egg, a small amount of yogurt or buttermilk, applesauce, wet chicken crumbles etc. I hope you start to see an improvement soon. Good luck.

The hen that I just treated with fluconazole (Diflucan) had visible yeast in her mouth and trachea, foam oozing from her mouth, she could hardly breath and she had a huge crop that kept filling with gas. Three days of fluconazole and she was 100% better. Fluconazole is now on my list of "must have drugs".

You can get fluconazole without a prescription, just do a search for fluconazole for fish. If you live in Canada, it's sold OTC as Canesoral.

Thanks yes just doing chick feed crumbles right now since she rejected the egg, also she did not like the apple sauce, yogurt or kefir and if she is eating I am not going to force feed her. She is drinking plenty though.

Good to know on the Fluconazole too.

Thanks Kathy for the info that we can get the Canesoral in Canada, good to know for the future. :)

I got the Monistat (miconazole) suppositories as it was what I could get the fastest, and am also giving her Amoxicillin because she almost aspirated yesterday, or most likely did, and I was worried. I have not had to empty her crop for 24 hours, and I am trying not to do it again because lately it has been much thicker and she has been choking on it, before it was a lot of fluid and easy to do, and she was very uncomfortable without me doing it. I think her throat is sore too. She is better today and breathing better, normally now. She is not eating as much though, but I am going to persist, she is pretty picky about what she eats too, she will not eat apple sauce or yogurt for example and she is getting difficult to medicate so I am really not about to force feed her, especially liquids and am just getting the meds into her twice a day. But she is bright and alert and talking. She is eating a little though and drinking. She probably would eat soft fruits, and I might get her some today, we have some huckleberries outside and they don't have much sugar in them. Oh yes and her crop is much smaller, I am massaging it a few times a day too.

Have you weighed her yet? Just think about it... what is one of the first things that happens when you take an animal to the vet? They get weighed, right? For me it serves two purposes - 1) allows me to give proper dosing of medication, 2) tells me if they are drinking/eating enough - any loss means they aren't.

No because I don't have an accurate way to weigh her right now, my bathroom scales are always off a pound or two more, they are electronic, so I am not going to get a good weight, I would need to get a scale to weigh her. Hmm maybe I can use my postage scale lol!
