I did, or rather do have sand in my coop but with this last cold spell, I put down lots of pine shavings because my girls would go in the coop and sit on the floor to get warm. They usually roost at night but some of the nights they slept in the shavings. I'm thinking of keeping it in there as I do have deep litter in the run.

I had to pick up a warming base for our waterer too. Actually, I think their poop is a lot easier to clean when it's frozen lol!

Lol, I ordered heated waterers, and by the time they arrive, it'll be above freezing. Poop's definitely easier to clean up in these frozen temps, no complaint there.

You say it's easier now, and the poop that stays on top of the sand, is. I'll give you that. But just wait until you get some stuck to the base of the trays!

Lol, I haven't switched over to sand yet, thinking about switching right side coop, when I spring clean. Linoleum floor is peeling, figure I'd cut it out, and put down sand, should I?

Hey there! I just recently joined about a month or so ago, but w the holidays I've been hit & miss.... I'm from down around Charleston. I have 2 white crested Polish hens, a chocolate laced brahma ( so I was told, but I haven't been able to find much info on anything but the brahma part ), a dark brahma hen & then 3 Swedish Flowering Hen Roosters,that were supposed to be pullets. I went for the SFH, and she even told me she'd take them back if they did end up being Roos, but then she was in the middle of a massive move. 2 of the the boys even throw white- they're all so beautiful, I just am a bit heartbroken every time I look at them. I'll keep one Roo, but now that the craziness of the holidays are over I need to get serious on finding new homes for the other 2.

Thank you!! I was lucky to get the coop finished enough the night before Christmas Eve to move the spoiled "babies" out of the house and do some insane frenzied cleaning!
I was debating same as you between shavings and sand, but at the last minute went w the shavings. After the freak snow came thru, I'm glad I did. I will change to sand in the spring and use the shavings as compost in all of my flower beds...

I am from Sumter and I have 6 chickens (will be adding 6 more this spring.) 1 rooster (RIR) and 5 hens (2 RIR, and 3 ISA Brown). I might be looking for Barred Rock eggs soon if anyone close by has any they are selling.
