My DH works the night shift, too. He loves it. Hey, I get the bed all to myself, I am not complaining!

Yup, the first thing DH says we will plug in is the brooder lights down at the barn and the 'bator. HE is my enabler!

That is why he wanted a generator. He says I put too much time and energy into the chickens to let something happen. He's my sweetie of more than 30 years. What a man!

Yes, when you head up for those eggs in Newberry I am only about another hour drive north. Keith has been here several times, he can tell you just how far from him I am. I have lots and lots of Frizzles and Sizzles in many colors and ages. Check out my website and those pages. They are adorable!

So I dont have a generator and have a fireplace that is more for looks than heat so I dont know what I would do if we lost power. What or how do you keep them warm when power is lost and dont have a generator? How did the do it back in the old days like the 60s or 70s. If I had to rely on my girls they would be dead for sure cause they are young. I do have a camping stove I could heat up water bottles but that wouldnt last long I would run out of fuel and that would get old very quick so mmmmmmm what would I do?????E

I use a Genesis 1588, which has cables that you can plug into your car cigarette lighter to keep the heater going. I have used them several times (I lose power OFTEN down here!). I have since bought their other cable, plus an extra boat battery...If the power goes out now, I can hook up the battery to the hatcher and the incubator (they're all sitting together now). This way, I don't have to move the incubator downstairs and into the garage, in the dark, and balancing the eggs so they don't roll together!!! Of course, since having things set up this way, I haven't lost power...I guess that's a good thing!

Yeesh, that reminds me, I need to ask DH if he has gas for the generator just in case.

You know, I think it's funny- everyone who has never really been around chickens is always talking about how loud roosters are. . . but good grief, when some of my pullets sing the egg song, they beat the boys by a mile!

I just sold my first 6 dozen eggs to Happy Cow Creamery! The girls have almost bought themselves a bag of feed
lol.png
I hope they sell; we haven't graded any so they sell for less than the others they sell. Of course, the others they sell come from Lugoff and thereabouts, which isn't exactly as local as I am to them. Not far, but not ten minutes down the road either.

When the power went out years ago we used the big hand warmers that you open and shake to get the heat started beside our Guinea Pig cages. Now we laugh because the piggies like it pretty cool and we keep our house at 62 in the winter.
However, the chickies do need the heat so I guess you could put the hand warmers under a washcloth in the brooder box and make sure their water was well on the other end.
I have a whole cabinet filled with those things. If the power goes out then we can lay them in a line down the center of the bed and it warms under covers enough for us to sleep. I keep saying I am going to put in a gas fireplace but I haven't got that far yet. Too much else to do! but that would be the bomb for my den.

I got gas for the generator but need to fill the tank and then refill the jug. I have 2 barrel fulls of water down in the barn for the chickens and ducks. We have well water so no power, no water unless we drop a bucket and haul it up and we have done that before! Just easier to keep gallon jugs stored in every closet and available spaces under the cabinets. And the 75 gal down at the barn can water the horse, too.

LOL Yes, I think my hens sing the egg song much louder than my roos crow! Glad my neighbors don't care if I have all these roos but then, it is the country.

And total CONGRATS on selling those eggs! I love for the birds to earn their keep. I just wish they would put me on the payroll!

The closer we get to Sunday the more snow they are predicting. Guess that means no school.

AKsmama- Congrats on the egg sale!!!!!! Now I just have to wait for mine to lay maybe the next month around mid Fed

Trust ME all of you will know!!!!! I will be super excited! And if I get more eggs than I can eat or my dad can eat...I have about 11 friends who have already staked claim on them at whatever the cost

Nadine-Yes U Are!!! My Chicken Dealer!!! haha!!!! I'm excited about the new chicks!!! And in time if I do get a rooster He Shall B a JG!!! Love those Big Birds!
So the Wish list for new chicks are Blue JG's, Silver-laced Wyandottes, and would love standard splash cochin(like ur big girl you have Nadine)Awesome! My problem is reading/seeing others and wanting them too and patiences(lord I need patiences)lol

I too have made preperations for power outage. I got my kerosene heater out and filled it, giving it a whirl tonight to make sure it works...Well it's Hot in Da House! It Works!

I also thought about going to the Morganton Show on the 2-11. Still undecided! Leaning towards a high maybe!!!But afraid I'll get more Ideas..........

Well, now, Mr Yancy, those JG eggs will be in the bator today! I hope we get a good hatch. I haven't any other eggs in my Sportsman so these and my own girls' eggs may go in the Genesis. That way if we lose power on Monday or Tuesday I can just plug in that small bator and be fine. AND I won't be tempted to set more eggs! wait a minute.....I think I see some.....

You all see where we here in the upstate are supposed to get between 6-10 inches of snow?
ep.gif

I have to go to Walmart for some food and essentials since I haven't been in about 2 weeks. I dread that! And we should get kero for our heater too. Good idea Yancy, about that! We always start ours outside first though because it sits and collects dust most of the time and really stinks when we first light it. But the winds are rough today so I am not sure what we will get done with it.

I am making a last trip to Williams for grain in case we do get a lot and then mud is here for a few days after. My old car serves as a truck right now until I find another to purchase. And that car sits low enough that it doesn't like mud. I have hay for the horse and most things are in place....I hope. This sounds like it may get rough since they are saying sleet and ice. Somebody is going to hit a power pole or ice will take limbs down and we are liable to be without power for a while. I pray not but it is best to be prepared!

Are you others getting prepared? What have I missed?

And yes, I am excited about snow. I may have to be out in it most of the time but it makes the world so beautiful and the chickens are so funny in it that I can't help it.

Okay after careful consideration I have decided I would rather have snow then the ice they are calling for down here!

I have stocked up on animal feed and am making a run to the store for house supplies in a little bit then I will be ready. Luckily I don't have any eggs in the bator to worry about. Eric and Nadine I will be thinking about you both that you don't lose power!
fl.gif

I will be taking pics of those week old babies later will have to post a pic and let you all see what I am seeing! We are also filling up all water troughs and containers as we have well water...last ice storm down here power lines went down and we didn't have power for 5 days...glad we have a wood stove, I got pretty good cooking on it

Okay Have a great day!
