Hi! There's a bright spot! No loss of power!
This weather is strange and unnatural and I don't like it at all.
Beautiful pics!
I never thought I'd see it happen, but most of my birds never left coops ALL DAY to venture into their snow-covered yards. The ducks thought it was a party --- they are tough (or crazy).

Give a whistle if I can help enable anyone in any way! What part of VA is Suffolk in? I was born over by Waynesboro.

Glad everyone kept power on, we got the freezing rain part only, no snow. The thermometer got up to 31F and then started going backwards again. DH ended up not going to work at all today, after a zillion phone calls from the powers that be. Seems none of the head honchos watch the weather, the original plan was to send him to Shaw AFB in Sumter. Uhm, no. Not today and probably not tomorrow, either!

Thank goodness we got another load of firewood last weekend. We'd be out by now if we hadn't.

Did anyone see the mess on the Ravenel bridge? That was nuts, what on earth made folks think they could make it?

Stay warm, be safe.

I do! And every one of my animals has made me personally responsible for the snow. The horses are not happy at all having to walk through the white stuff, and expect me to shovel a path for them. The cows are like, 'make it go away'. The dog is like, "What the? I ain't walking with you!" Every wild bird has decided to roost in my barn and poop on my horses. My domesticated birds are all snug and warm in their building, but the Amazon is mad because the cockatiels wants to use his cage to look out the window. While the Sun Conure wants to feed me peanuts and entice me into her nest. She's the happiest because after all these years of living with humans she finally discovered she was a female and laid three clutches of eggs this spring and summer. I had to change her name from Andy to Sassy Ann. The two parakeets chirp and kiss each other like no tomorrow. The turtle, who is dormant, is blissfully unaware of all the drama going on around him. I may follow suit and not be seen until spring!

Ranchhand, I'm in the Southeast corner of Virginia. My part of Suffolk is about an hour drive West of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

My current flock is made up of hatchery birds and hatches from my brother's hatchery flock. My birds hold me responsible for food and the weather. They are not amused. You should have heard the outcry when I rolled the trashcan out to the street and didn't feed them first.

My children are on a two hour delay because of the cold stuff on these narrow, country roads bordered with deep ditches on both sides. Son will get the pep talk about behaving on the bus so the driver can concentrate.

My flock is not happy either! When it snowed after Christmas, they were okay after they realized they could find places to scratch around at the treeline, but this time they absolutely YELL at me when I go out there. They don't believe that we didn't have anything to do with it. The Lakenvelder roo flew up to one of our bedroom windows and was glaring accusingly at me. Absolutely nothing has melted yet and with nighttime temps in the low 20s and teens the next few nights. . . ugh. My husband is working from home, the kids are home, we have to be quiet b/c DH is constantly on conference calls. . . I'm going crazy!

We had a little bit of freezing rain last night so I thought it was going to be bad today. We didnt have any water yesterday, but got up this morning and WOOHOO water. Dishes got washed, washing put in, showers and such.Ducks are now happy they have CLEAN water. The snow is now all crunchy so I made a path from hay covered snow, to water buckets, to feed dishes to pools. They still arent all that happy. Its funny that they will all jump in the pool but they dont like walking or sitting on the snow.

Chores weren't as bad here either! I really thought it would be a frozen mess after the freezing rain yesterday but I turned most all of the water containers upside down last night so the lip was empty. When I righted them this morning.... goodie, goodie, gumdrops, water flowed into the troughs! Some I never got to turn upside down but I poured a bit of house water on them and broke the ice out easily enough.
However! It is supposed to be in the teens tomorrow night! Now that gets more serious with frozen water. Ick!

I am super glad we still have running water and power. Of course, no power, no water so I have plenty stored up. But still, what a hassle if the power is out!

Betsy over at Renegade Ridge Farm in Chester lost a duck pen and maybe a duck so let's all keep them in our thoughts and prayers. I hope the rest of us are going to be okay and our animals safe.

My shed birds are complaining about being inside but when I opened a pop door for the bantam Cochins to go out they just looked at me. They are older and know the drill. So, yes, I am being blamed for the snow, too.

The dog loves this! But then she is a Great Pyrenees and bounces around like a puppy. She will hate August but the snow she is loving. I can't tell she has even gone in her doghouse since this stuff started. New bedding looks undisturbed.

Bleh, this ice is headed your way, with snow as well. Hope the kids will be safe both to and from school. Most schools and government offices down here are on a delayed schedule today, if not closed completely.

I spent quite a few summers at my grandparent's cottage on Sandy Point, north of you. I still love the Bay area.

My ducks are happily swimming in ice water, which amazes me. They chickens are content with their suet blocks. It's still brutally cold but dry as can be. Not above freezing again today, at least not where we are.
