South Carolina

I hear you guys, I have way to many roos.
I had some one kill two of my RIR hens and a hawk got one. Oh and one of my hens turned out to be a roo............oops lol. I was at 3 roos and two hens I got two hens from a local guy here in Travelers Rest the other day.
Im gunna put the barred rock and the golden comet roos in the freezer unless some one here says they want them. And in the next few weeks I need to grab a couple more hens. If anyone has laying hens let me know I only have brown egg layers at the moment. If any one has colored egg lays I need at least two more to have enough eggs for the family.

I just purchased a Brinsea 20 eco incubator and have some EE, black sex link and some mutts in there, they should be hatching about May 1st.

Think I may try and incubate some turkeys this year too.

Yes! We are close! fun fun!
I am headed off to Savannah tomorrow to run [my first] 5k - the susan komen race for the cure. Wish me luck!!!

I don't get up your way too often - I was in Beaufort a few months back doing the extreme homemakover show though.

If I panic about something with my birds, I'm calling on you since your local.

You better watch out - I didn't even know I had to PUT them in their hen house the first 2 nights... hehe!

What do you mean "doing the extreme homemaker show"? I LOVE that show, did you work on a project with them?

I had some involvement in the show that taped in Beaufort. (I think it airs next Sunday?!) My company sponsored the VIP tent & I got to go do the furniture load in & be all vip & stuff. It was super cool

I wonder if I made the cut to get on tv?!

Cool, thanks! I'mma keep calling mine Black Stars then!

1 of the hens I recently purchased was referred to as a black comet. Do you think this is the same thing? She is black with a green irridescent undertone & a bit of Red in her neck.

Do you know someone in the chicken coop building business?

Not really.

My original 4 coops came from a Mennonite place here that builds outdoor structures. I needed several more and a friend of ours from church needed money so he is building them for me. Saves me a little money( not much though!), but I'd rather give it to him.

They remind me of playhouses. My grandmother still has my 1st playhouse. It's 30+ yrs old. I'd love to have it since my dad built it and he has since passed away. But, it's not n the best of shape and I'd b afraid to move it.

They are playhouses. I had them convert them to coops. I wanted something cute. How fun would it be to have your old playhouse! I wonder if someone could shore it up where it is so it could be moved. That would be so special!

The black Comets are also sex links. Yours sounds just like one.
There are different ways they breed them to make sex links and they come out with some different colorings. I call them all black stars or I refer to the reds as sugar tails now. I used to say red stars but DH says it looks like their tails were dipped in sugar and they are good girls (friendlier and not as bossy as the blacks). He says sugar tails so much that it has now stuck for me.
I have both and love them for their egg laying ability and personalities.

It seems we all are always expanding!
At some point I have to stop getting so big. There is too much to do to take adequate care of everyone.
However, having said THAT......I have 2 big wooden crates sitting next to the new duck runs to be converted into another duck coop and Sunday my friend is bringing me 2 more. I will probably wind up getting 10 or 12 of these.
Since I have the small breeds growing up I figure these will make great 2 story apartments for the little buggers. They will have covered pens on 2 sides and since Joy showed me how great it is to have an upstairs and downstairs in the big wooden crates I figure I can house a trio or quad on top and bottom. My Frizzles and Sizzles will fit well, too!

I wish I could paint today! I have so much to get painted before I can actually do much work. I am betting though that Sunday I will get it done. When Debra brings the other wood crates and sees me painting she will probably jump right in. Though I hope to have DH doing a good bit of work this weekend, too. But he really wants to build my brooders so my brooder room is not so full of chicks.

Always something to do!
