Amazing. Good ole' Weezy!
I am not sure if I have had one to live through what was actual heat stroke or something else going on. I, unfortunately, have this barn blindness and when something happens to one of mine I try to be reasonable about what I should do to treat it. I often miss the most obvious. One reason I suppose my friend, the vet, likes for me to bring him his eggs instead of coming here. But he can see more than I can and I just miss the most obvious things sometimes! I feel inadequate when he points out something that I should have seen and known right off the bat.

If I were you, Pink, I would have her fecal checked by a vet. It could be something else but that is the first thing I always try to have checked. However, make sure they know it is a poultry stool sample. Dr. Patch's office missed intestinal worms on one of my samples before because they said they didn't know that it was a chicken. When I look in a microscope at a stool sample I either see poop or parasites, be it lung flukes, cocci or the ever easy to spot roundworms. I was in shock about that.
I wish I could drive all the way across Greenville to my friend's clinic but I never have time so I now make sure the clinic here knows it is poultry and tell them to get out their book. Some folks don't love parasitology as much as I do. However, they can probably spot the differences in blood cells that I can't. I really hated trying to read those. Thank goodness for machines! (Showing my age here.)

I love that song! At least it isn't a remake of the old ones like some other people are doing. I like the original songs and I love ones that are funny! Bad to say but I like the one where he wants to check her for ticks!

But the fishing song is dear to me because my whole family have always been avid fishermen. Those men spent every Sat going and most of their retirement on the lake. I grew up in a boat on Lake Hartwell because of fishing! That song means a lot to me. I love it! However, my brother lost a lot of girlfriends and 2 wives to what he claimed was because of his fishing.

This may be a bit hard to see but this is my brother and Dad (both deceased now) out on the lake doing what they love to do. They fished constantly once my dad retired and my brother went on disability. One of my uncles took this photo. My brother owned a big pontoon boat and my dad had 2 bass boats.

And that is probably way more than any of you ever wanted to know! Since I can't say that about my animals and my DH. He has been very good to allow for our feed bill being more than out grocery bill our entire marriage.

You are not being an ignorant guinea owner--all good questions! One I have for you is--are all the eggs under your hen guinea eggs? I had a game hen once kill all the keets and keep the chicks because she could tell they were different by their peeping. Now I have had cochin hens keep both just fine. Your keets will not leave the hen but they do travel further from her than chicks of the same age will, as a general rule. Making them a little easier target for things to get them. If they are valuable to you it might be safer to put them in a brooder as soon as they are hatched. You will get bigger birds, faster! Not sure if you ever compared chicks under hens to those hatched at the same time in the brooder--chicks in brooder tend to grow a little faster. They do not have to work for their food I guess!

So you're telling me I need to take out the 3 frizzle eggs I put under her 7 days after I set the guineas? boo! Well, I'll just put the guineas in the brooder so they can't escape my loooovvvveeee!!!

It depends on the temperment of your hen--I have had my cochins raise both chicks and keets but even then the hens seem to pay more attention to the chicks. The chicks do stay closer and are more attentive. I just had really bad luck with my game hens and the games are such better moms--to chicks! It would not hurt to put the keets in a brooder to just be sure....

Amy, I think that was nice of you to share and not more information than I wanted to know. It is always nice to know a little of what makes the people we talk with on here! My Dad loved to fish too and often sat on a creek or river bank doing it! Fishing is great and I would get my husband to do it more with me and my daughter but I have all these chickens to take care of and the cool morning are the best time to do that!! Humm, chickens--fishing--both relaxing!

And your husband is a real keeper! I hear about the birds food bill often even though this summer they have payed for themselves!

Scarlet is little smoth feathered sizzle so we'll see how day 1 goes and if the keets aren't being watched, into the kiddie condo they will go.

Thanks for the advice!

I have a black ameraucana rooster. No hen. He is about nine weeks old. Interested?

****
Hi, how much are you asking for your rooster? I have a small EE roo and 2 EE girls, But I would like to get at least a trio of americauna's that will breed true, My daughter and son are homeschooled. shes 12th hes 6th.. and they are both taking Earth science ( of course at different levels of difficulty) and one of the areas is animals behavior and genetics, so that's why I was thinking the americauna's. they would breed true but should lay different enough colored eggs ( the hens) to be able to tell who's egg is who's, and that way we can track their genes to pre- determine color, size, egg color, etc, of their off spring as a hypothesis. I'm thinking that I need adults though or close to laying age, this will be a school-year long experiment, but they have to have time to hatch out a couple clutches of eggs to get good results by next spring, ( April) .

You having Americauna's what do you think? would there be a better breed? that you would suggest or I am I on the right track?
Pink

I sent you a PM about tge roo, but it might not have gone through. If you dont get it, let me know and I will send again.

Hello, My first post here.
My name is Donald and I was born in Columbia. My family is from Walhalla and Iva. I live in Mountain Rest now and have just started to raise chickens. At persent I have 21 Domiques. They will be six weeks old tomorrow 8/11/2011. All are healthy and happy except for the heat but it's a little cooler up here than in the low lands. I'm raising my chickens for eggs and meat. Not sure they will ever be show quality but would like to go to a poultry event or two to see other birds. I think next year I may add some Marans. I lived in Europe for three years along time ago and liked the dark eggs they served over there. I may do qual or dove latter for meat as well. Just wanted to say hello for now and see if anyone else is arround Mountain Rest/Long Creek area. Donald

I haven't been on here in forever and I don't know why! Shame on me! My silkie hen hatched our guineas. Only two hatched but they were still following her around at eight weeks when I took them out of the run. Then they spent the rest of their time trying to get back to her. The stupid hawk got them both on the same day! I have 30 keets that I bought in with my partridge silkies right now. Everyone's getting along!
