Since we're speaking of chicken food, I will share my excitement. I'm having food delivered today from Rogers! Hopefully 3 - 4 weeks worth of food. It feels like Christmas!

If anybody is interested, the Faithway Food they sell at Rogers Feed in Pelzer has really worked to keep their prices down. They have had only 2 price increases in the past year where all the others are going up 50 cents or more every couple of weeks. Current price is $9.59 per 50# bag of layer, either pellets or crumble. That's a big difference. And they also give an incentive to shop there. Your purchases are cumulative and for every $300 you spend they give you $10 off your order. Just thought I'd share as I was so relieved to find them. There's no way I could afford to keep my birds and pay $15 per bag for food.

That's a big difference! What do you mean it's being delivered? Do they deliver feed?

Yes, they will deliver here. They charge a $15 delivery fee and there's a minimum order of 40 bags. Not sure what their delivery zone is but I've been driving down there every week getting all that my Jeep will hold. It's so nice to know I won't have to drive down there for several weeks. I hope to be able to have it delivered all winter. I'd like to stay ahead a bit on my food in case of bad weather.

Thanks Joy for the words of encouragement and words of experience. I don't have anything as hearty as a Magnolia anywhere near. Just a small open field lined with woods. I think it is a poplar they are in...whatever it is EVERYTHING around here looses their leaves in the winter except the few tall limbless pines growing between in the woods that I haven't cut to rid them. I will build some kinda shelter to offer them for the winter. I am thankful for the suggestions of having something out there to offer them IF they so choose...LOL

I know how you feel, my guineas sleep in a pecan tree so it's very bare all winter. Yet they insist on sleeping there, even through the ice and snow storms we had. I always have a coop or shelter close by that I leave open, just in case. They don't use it but it makes me feel better that I've provided for them anyway. Even if they refuse my good intentions.

Not sure if this helps or if someone has already mentioned it--I feed my birds very little in the morning before I turn them out(that is only the ones I am turning out--actually the layers always have food in the feeder but they are not a problem at getting in anyway)--especially the guineas, if I put them out in the morning and then at night I feed them before it gets dark and close them up. It works great to get them in with little effort. The only way I can get all these guineas in....

I just wanted to let everyone know I went to TSC and pick up the Sep/Oct copy of The Poultry Magazine and they have a wonderful article in it about mixing medicine for small flocks of ducks and geese. I suppose it would work for poultry also. It seem very informative. People like me who are still learning might want to see if they can purchase this.

Mine have food outside about all day. I do try to feed them only what they will eat in the evenings before bed but they leave some in the rubber containers or plastic tubs and nibble through out the day. Then about 2 hours before dark I go out and put out more grain so they can fill their crops before going to bed but there isn't any grain in their coops to make them go up at night.
After my layers have gone to roost in the cold months I will go in and dump about a half gallon of grain in their hopper so when they get up they can eat in the hopes that will encourage them to lay before I let them out. Not real sure that works though.

But all my ducks and chickens are fed outside of their coops so they have to eat before they coop up and get locked in for the night. Everyone seems to be fine with that deal.

I figure Guineas like to sleep out in the trees when it is hot weather so they get a better air flow around them. I did notice my chickens were huddled together last night when I closed them up, so much so that I had to count because I had thought I lost some! But nope, none lost, just huddled more together in the back of the coop away from the cool air.

Jolie loves this weather. She has been bouncing around like a puppy. Figures! I finally got all the old hair off of her! Now she will grow that winter coat back.

Is that the European Magazine? I think I have bought a few of those.
Does the article tell you about comfry and such? I may have that one. I just have to look around for it......

Amy, This is the first time I picked one of these up. It saids it is published in Alabama. It just talks about the way to break down the amount of medicine to give to your small flock in different forms whether it is powder, liquid, injectable.

Interesting! I will have to look for that next time I go into TSC. I am not sure if I have seen one of those magazines or not.
Still haven't looked for my other one.
I have had too many sales going on and shipping out too many boxes to have time for much. I am just now eating my sandwich for lunch.
Oh, and I turned on the furnace for heat this morning so DD could get out of bed without freezing (I thought it felt fine) and the guy that wired it up this past summer obviously hadn't a clue. The AC and furnace were running together. Smart, real smart! And he had surgery and can't come honor his work. Amazing!

What a wild and wacky week I have had so far.

Now back out to do feeding and collect more eggs. I feel like a chicken with my head.....oops, better not say that!
