I raise marans but I don't show my birds. I don't raise them for show, I breed what I like. Some of my birds have been show quality but sometimes the pet quality birds are my favorite. The whole show circuit would take the fun out of it for me.

I don't plan to show either. I don't have the time. But I have been selling eggs around the country. Not sure I want to deal with unhappy customers if something isn't perfect. My stock is very good but not perfect.

It seems to me that it takes a lot of birds to get that one "perfect" show winner. Some people don't have realistic expectations. I'm kinda short on PATIENCE when it comes to public relations.

For me - it's my inlaws AND my own family! I swear that I was switched at birth. My own Mother thinks I'm crazy and just cannot understand the whole animal thing (especially pets in the house). Nevermind her opinion of having hundreds of chickens. And now we're talking about adding a horse....I worry she'll send the men in white coats to get me. When I told her I was going to homeschool my son she immediately explained to me why I couldn't because with all my animals in the house DSS would surely take my children away from me. You know DSS visits everyone who homeschools and apparently there is a law against having animals in the house.

All I hear from my mother-in-law is how she doesn't understand how I went from owning such a "glamourous" bridal salon to being a farmer. She even told me yesterday that I used to dress nicer when I had my bridal salon. I told her I'm happier now and that's all I care about. I did own a very fancy schmancy place. And now I don't. Get over it! I secretly think she's jealous of the farm. One of those people who never followed a dream and then kind of resents those who do. Oh, well! No ones stopping me now!

OMG, this sounds like my Mom!
She could never understand why I wore T-shirts and jeans the whole time growing up, went hunting and fishing with my dad and never would fly to New York with her to go shopping.
Pluuueeeze!

I was born pure country. Poor Mom despaired of me ever having any class. The only class I ever wanted was to watch some show class with my favorite animals owned by my good friends!

Nor I, but I read. That especially, seems to be difficult for some people, doesn't it.

Well, we had our barn raisin' Monday.
wee.gif
My neighbor came with his tractor, my parents came to help my husband, my 16 year old son and me. I'm excited to see some progress. We got more than half of it up. There are 14 "ribs" altogether and we have 8 of them standing. We worked all day til dark and then I had my chicken chores to do. I'm so tired I can't sleep (but I'm getting ready to try). Just wanted to share a quick pic. This was before we were finished for the day so we do have more barn standing now. We still have a lot to do before I can put chickens in it.

My son in the bucket putting the bolts in the top of the barn. My husband made a platform on top of his work van so they could stand on it. You can see his feet on top of the bucket. My neighbor is in the tractor.

4 eggs have hatched. They all look to be speckled sussex. I have 3 more making noises. Don't know what to say about the 17 other eggs!
hmm.png
It looks like 2 blue eggs are going to hatch so some ameracaunas and not sure about the third, but its a dark chick so I know it isn't a light sussex chick. Find it interesting that so far the ones who have actually hatched have been all the same breed! Tough little buggers who can withstand my lack of bator knowledge???

Yeah, that is about as sophisticated as I want to get! Waxing my duck! Sometimes I can wax poetic but not often.

Mom loved fancy parties and getting together with the "ladies". She was in all those fancy clubs and such but I could not enjoy it. I wanted to be outside riding horses and sweating. Thank goodness my sister was more along her same interests. They enjoyed more stuff together. They thought I was nuts for having so many animals and moving out to the country. My sister lives in a big pretty house down on Lake Murray. She married into a family that likes politics so they have more to do with stuff in Columbia.

I am telling you, waxing a duck sure makes it easier but it looks like we will be duct taping the boys. That does sound funny!

I can't wait to see it finished. That is a great place to put it, too. I know you are excited because I am and it isn't even mine. You are going to enjoy this winter a bit more than the others. I can't wait to see it all finished up.
I can't even get a chance to finish putting plastic on my coops and here you are raising a barn!
