South Carolina

We have gone through the FIRST requirement to become NPIP or SC Small flock Certified. now we have to decide if we want to continue, and how the make the required changes, or test everyone all the time. and do we do AI testing too?

There was a LOT of good information that was skimmed over and too much info for one day. lots of pamphlets, big 2" binder full of information and a paperback book too.

A TON of info. So glad they provided the binder. The book has a lot of info in it also.....I read a little last night.

DH asked some questions about it but I was like - I have to process everything myself! I want a gate and a sign though!

Fence in my yard!

Not sure how much I have to change. I think we will definitely have to finish clearing up some of the downed trees and such that are at the bottom of the hill.

I still didn't get sleepy til around 2 am......... Just woke up a little bit ago....feel like crap.

Thanks, you guys. I am glad to hear about some things said there. I may not have gone but am always interested in hearing about chicken happenings.

One of the things I did yesterday here for selling eggs was a "curbside" service. People that wanted eggs called me as they started up the driveway, said how many dz and of duck or chicken or both, I met them outside, handed them eggs, collected money and they never got out of their cars. Most everyone was fine with that but most were return customers, too. Only once were there 2 cars in the driveway at the same time and had to go around each other. It moved quickly enough but I didn't get so much done as far as other work either.

I did not have any chickens to sell and am trying to hang onto my chicks I am hatching for now so no customers that way.

Thank you for the input. Yeah. they are only about 4 weeks still too so I opted for keeping them in the house. at least they don't jump out of their bin the way the ducklings were. they just got to be sooo big!!. They ducklings seem happy in their coop last night though. :) I guess another month and i will move the chicks out to the coop too.

Trixie, the picture is adorable. Isnt it a great feeling when they come running to you. As for puttng them out without the heat lamp. Keep in mind Chickens, need 95* the first week and then you decrease it by 5* per week. SO with our nights still in the 50's* it really depends on the age. We still have th eheat lamp on our 4 week olds in the house. If they were outside I wouldnt have the lamp on unless it wasnt warm. So If we put them in the chicken house I would have the heat lamp on until they were old enough for the 50* weather. SO Around 8 weeks old. before I took the lamp away as long as it was decent.

Now keep in mind, we are new to this still, but this is what we read when researching.

Thanks for popping in. Same to you Sam!

Amy we really learned a great deal. This class is really just that a class about what NPIP is all about, why it is around. AS they said, it is a voluntary program. The class covers diseases, paristes, nutritian, anatomy, biosecrutity, even a necropsy, and of course how to band and test your birds. We actually watched a detailed necropsy and actually drew blood sample and put on wing bands, and leg bands if we choose.

I highty recommend attentding the class even if you do not want to be a certified NPIP facility. Everyone will learn from the class. Now we have to see if we want to participate, and make some changes. One thing that was interesting, I thought that once you became NPIP you could only buy from someone who is NPIP, but that doesnt seem to be true. AS a tester, I could test the bird before bringing it home. At least thats what I understood.

Hope this answers some question, if you have any specific ones, send them, will be happy to answer. I am sure Nikki and Kimberly will share what the understood too.

No doubt we came home wiith a TON of info in a book and in the 3 ring binder that had all the slide show of the entire presentation.

"Captain Feather Man" you have to ask whom Nikki is? My feelings are hurt!! I'm the one whom calls you Captain Feather Man vs. Carolina Panther Fan :)

Learned a lot yesterday at the class. Nice to know I'm fairly compliment already. And only minimal changes needed. Forgot the reasoning, but it's suggested u keep brooder bins and incubators in separate rooms......Interesting info on diseases too....example which ones mom can pass along to her chick via the egg. Guess that's why eggs should b from npip farms too....

Kimberly stayed out of trouble. I won't tell how many cup cakes she ate:) But Amy, yes she ate one for you!!

I got to meet Robert and Kris today. My daughter found them both 4-leaf clovers and then found a 5-leaf clover for herself. And of course, they got to meet my little lamb, Tigger. Tried to sell them my serama hens but couldn't quite close the deal! So nice to meet more BYC people!
